Phoenix scheduled to land on Mars Sunday

If you haven't heard of this, I find that kind of cool. :)

It's amazing that we live in times when a human-made, computer space machine is landing on another planet to such little widespread fanfare.

Best,

I hope it doesn't run into Russell's teapot along the way.

Very cool, thanks!

"When Phoenix reaches Mars on May 25, 2008, the spacecraft will have traveled about 423 million miles."

Pretty sweet. And sad, because Britney Spears and American Idol are bigger news than landing a craft on a distant planet. The dumbing down of our society continues......

Jim Richards 05-21-2008 11:25 AM

Its mission is to find ice on Mars, so future astronauts can keep their beer cold while hanging out on the red planet.

Jims5543 05-21-2008 11:26 AM

I am going to tune in to NASA TV this Sunday and see if there is anything to watch, very cool!!!

onewhippedpuppy 05-21-2008 11:27 AM

"But Mars is a cold planet now; the average recorded temperature on Mars is -63? C (-81? F) with a maximum temperature of 20? C (68? F) and a minimum of -140? C (-220? F). "

No worries about hot beer. Sign me up!

Jim Richards 05-21-2008 11:29 AM

Matt, it's all relative. You'll still need to ice it down before the ball game. I'll bring the chips and salsa.

Landing is schedule for 4:38 pm Pacific time, FYI.

Phoenix has landed . . . and signal received!

Remarkable.

kstar 05-25-2008 03:55 PM

Should get some pictures soon.

Joeaksa 05-25-2008 04:09 PM

Just hope that the solar panels come out so that they can keep it powered up.

Great accomplishment! Funny how America always seems to be the country to be on the forefront of exploration like this.
