Nothing about those watches would motivate me to spend more than $100.00. The one in Wayne's first post is pretty cool though, because of the McQueen connection.

I gotta be honest. To a lot of people a top dollar watch is just a status symbol. Another way of saying, "Hey, look at me, i'm a jerkoff and i want you to know it!" ;)

What's the old joke? Ah...

What's the difference between a porsche and a porcupine? A porcupine has the pricks on the outside.

I like the TAG, this is what I want. Swiss made Motochron with Porsche gauge face.

This is the "Gruppe B"

This is the "RS 2.7"

They also make 906, 964, 356 and SC watches. Web site is German but can be foung at www.motochron.com

Scott,

Very nice looking! #2 & #4 could very easily find a home in my collection... that is if I ever won the lotto and could afford more watches!

It seems like for some men watches are like shoes are to women. Or cars. Or guns. Etc, etc.

And some people buy fake watches to look the part. Otherwise they would buy a good Seiko.

Corrected that statement for you. Not everyone in this world likes a Seiko.

M21,

My ex-wife had over 100 pairs of shoes. Will never get close to that number but the big difference is that my watches do not wear out and get thrown away like her shoes did.

I was about to ask, "is a seiko good?" I sure don't know. What makes it any better than a Timex? Is it the name? What makes a Rolex better than a Seiko? Is it the name? Or just the price tag?

LOL.

Beygon, if you are willing to supply and deliver $30.00 Seiko's, i hereby pledge to never buy anything but a seiko for as long as you do. For me, it's a simple matter of economics. Cause as long as the watch tells time and looks decent, i could really care less. :)

I'm a blue jean and t-shirt guy. If i cared any less about "looking the part" or being fashionable, i'd be a feminist.

Just pointing out to you that you can get a lot of good cheap watches, but you seem to WANT to buy a cheap imitation so you can look like the people you make fun of.

Only you are wearing a fake.

Good one! Problem is that with a good watch it will not go down in value. My first Rolex, a 1974 or so GMT master cost $275 in the PX. Its now worth in the $6000 region.

Couldn't agree more...

My "losses" - Original 70's Monaco Heuer, purchased in 1999 for $900. Sold for $1500. Now worth $5k+

1960's Rolex GMT, purchased in 1999 for $1400. Sold for $1800. Now worth $5k+.

1970's Omega ProPlof (the "Jaques Costeau" watch), purchased in 1999 for $1400. Sold for $2200. Now worth $9k ~ 14k, depending on accessories.

"Real" (quality) watches appreciate.

At the time I sold these watches, I laughed all the way to the bank...now I'm just :( http://forums.pelicanparts.com/suppo...ys/bawling.gifhttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/suppo...s/a_frusty.gif

Ah, but i made that comment several posts after you started your rant against me. :)

Also, key phrase is highlighted in bold.

Looks just as good, works just as good(for about a year), but only costs $30.00

That's win, win, win.

Still, if you want to bring me $30.00 Seikos, you will have a customer for life. :D

You mean like taking an inexpensive Carrera and making an RS clone out of it?

I would be concerned about the authenticity of any high end purchases off ebay, like the knock off website posted on page one.

Anyone know Price $$ & Source?

einreb 05-24-2008 03:42 PM

yes. that is not the coolest watch i've ever seen.

the 'gulf' thing is a little off putting to me. its like the guy that shows up to the DE race in one of those aftermarket gulf lemans jackets. i'm hardly able to control my urge to punch him.

this is a cool watch...

Smart. I searched for these and found much nicer replicas. Check around.

Wayne - that TAG Gulf 'Monaco' is pretty much laughed at by serious watch guys. Just TAG trying to squeeze yet another version out of the Monaco platform. There was never a Gulf Monaco back in the day.

Anyway, if you want the coolest watch around, look at the Monaco V4. This is a modern version of the Monaco ... using belt drive. It should be coming to market very soon!

Note the striking similarity to the 911 vertical fan :D

My daily watch is a very good Panerai "knockoff". I don't wear it to impress anybody, i've always liked the Panerai style but not the price tag.

I've been complimented on it many times and always explain that it's a copy. I'm not out to fool or impress anyone. I'm just a stylish, cheapa$$, mo-fo.

Ronbo 05-24-2008 08:09 PM

I wonder if those belts ever need changing.

I bet M21Sniper is a hypocrite, and I'll tell you why.

The guy won't spend $31 on a watch, but I would bet that he will spend $1,000 on a scope... and probably $200 on a pelican case to store it in... so that he can brag to his buddies about the latest gun-nut gizmo that he just "got a great deal on."

If the kids arent starving and the mortgage is getting paid, then a couple thousand bucks for a stupid watch is not the end of the world. A watch is something that you wear everyday, and for me it is a constant pat on the back for making a good financial decision or two. And silent motivation to always be on the lookout for the next good deal (real estate).

and I'm guilty on both counts. I have nice Rolex's and I have a pre-ban, law enforcement only, collapsible Colt Sporter .223 that i bought in 1991... its never been fired. But I like knowing that its in the back of my gun safe, just because. :p

BTW, that Gulf Monaco Watch is pretty dang cool.

craigster59 05-24-2008 09:22 PM

It's like Art, buy what you like. The hell with what people think. If you can handle the price tag and it pleases your eye, you'll enjoy wearing it.
