Ford Ranger 4L
Paul (pwd) and others told me to look for a 4L, if I am going to buy a Ford Ranger. Years ago, I found a 3L that suited me (I was in Spokane with a broken 911, needing a haul vehicle and the price was right). That truck was a good one, but without much power. I finally got rid of it and found a newer one, with the 4L engine.
Guys, if you're gonna get a Ford Ranger pickup and you want a six-cylinder......do yourself a favor. Find a 4L. This thing is WAY WAY more fun to drive. Thing has enough power to oversteer. It's almost as much fun to drive as my 911. Paul was right. At least, about this topic.

I had a '96 Mazda B2300, which was their copy of the Ranger, IIRC. It was a capable, reliable truck, but I couldn't stand the underpowered 4 cyl. engine. If someone makes a truck with decent power that gets close to 30 mpg hwy., I would be tempted to unload my 330i for one. While at Gogar's show the other night, Charles Kieffner pointed out a Chevy Silverado in the parking lot that looked like a monster to me. But he said it gets something close to 30 mpg. Maybe I need to start looking again.

I am told the Ranger 4-bangers get about 30 mpg, and the six-bangers get about 20. This 4L does get about the same mpg as the 3L.

Father in law has a '94 Ranger with the 4 banger, he's seen about 32 MPG on the highway. Gutless, but I could handle the 32 MPG part. It helps to offset his 10 MPG F250SD crew cab.

I paid $4.79 @ gallon at a Mobil station last night, so I don't need to drift or over-steer in a Ford Ranger. I'll take the 30 mpg motor, thanks.

Our '99 4.0 Ranger, loaded with extras, used to average 20.6 mpg. Now that Oregon is mandated 10% ethanol, it averages 18. (Yes, we keep a log)
I'd call performance adequate...probably in the range of my old 911T in things like lane merges, etc. And yeah, if you're not careful, you can break the rear end loose. Super? They are $pendy, but if you buy a set of edelbrock's best shocks, you'll be amazed at the improvement in handling... Hell Super, I'm right...far right on all topics. It's just that you can't handle the truth..

Bought my 4L Ranger new in 2001 and not a bit of trouble 98K miles later. I haul twin side rail tool boxes for my business and still get about 18-20 mpg overall.

98K with no troubles? Wonder how many P-car folks can say that? I know I couldn't have...
Anyway, we have found our '99 to be reliable as hell...but we're only approaching 47K...It's air conditioning makes ice cubes...and I love the anonymous aspect of it. No second glances from cops.

Ever change a water pump on one of those 4 liter Rangers? Not a fun job. Ford should be scolded for that one.

Edelbrock, eh? I do want to replace the shocks. I was wondering if Bilstein makes shocks for this thing.

Not the first good thing I've heard about the Edelbrock shocks. I've heard comments from several others that they make a huge difference on trucks. Me thinks that shocks are one area where the truck companies cut corners. Low expectations and all that.
