Crazy Neighbour

I'm down at my garage today when my neighbour pulls up with his pick up truck full of boxes from the hardware store. He opens his garage, and I see that it is stuffed to the rafters with more of the same boxes.

"WTF?" I ask.

Turns out he's discovered that you can buy copper scouring pads at Home Hardware and Costco for less than the price of copper - and he's hoarding this stuff waiting for the price of copper to rise still further. (Seems it's $4.00 +/- a pound now, and one of these ten-packs from Home Hardware also weighs in at a pound but only costs $2.49 - and sometimes less.)

The things people do. This guy is one of the brightest guys I know, but smokes far too much reefer and has never done a serious days work in his life. In the early '80's he was peripherally implicated in a plot to assassinate Margaret Thatcher and did some time, but since then he's just been cruising. Almost cornered the mustard seed market once and made a bundle.

But copper scouring pads?

I've often wondered about mowing etiquette...

Most of my neighbors use a lawn service. I still hold out and do my own lawn. Most of it is because I am too damn cheap to pay the price they want to cut my lawn, but I also enjoy the mowing.

Anyhow, here in Tejas it tends to get pretty damn hot in the summer. I have been know to fire up the mower as early as 7:30 AM on a Saturday to avoid the heat. Is this not acceptable??

I have a crazy old Czech SOB who lives next door to me. He's a menace. Drives recklessly around the neighborhood kids. The sidewalk next to this house is destroyed and his pathetic attempts are repair using black top and SAND(WTF?!?!?) have made it worse.

I used to have a neighbor that does this when I was an apartment dweller. Drove me nuts! It's a blessing in disguise though. I ended up moving and bought my first house!

least he doen't call the cops on you when you have your carpets cleaned!

Another neighbor of ours tried removing some shrubs by attempting to pull them out with his pick-up. After several attempts of snapped rope he finaly did it but he also pulled out some sprinkler line that the roots had grown around. He had a fountain for 4 hours - our leeward side of the lawn was swampland for 2 days.

Our Son and I were watching this entire thing unfold. At one point our Son said "Dad, didn't he try the same thing a few years ago with a tree stump and nearly killed himself? Whadda say we grab some shovels and help out Mr George do it right?"

"Na, there is no way it ever ends good with him and the further away we position ourselves the safer we will be."

He looked me dead in the eye and said "true dat..."

The wisdom of a 9 year old...

So how high does the price of copper have to get to cover the cost of his garage rental, sales tax, running back and forth, etc.?

I think in Cali you can fire up starting at 7:00AM without disturbing the peace legally.

You can have some real fun with him by calling the cops and telling them your neighbor is stockpiling drug paraphernalia. Brillo pads are commonly used as filters in crack pipes and are legally considered drug paraphernalia in a lot of jurisdictions.

Only if he pisses you off of course, but it's still nice to have one hanging over on him.

See, if you hang around PPOT long enough you will learn something.

Copper scrubbers, HA! I hear the price of antihistamines is going to skyrocket so I have been filling my garage with them. Fortunately no one would every consider that as... hey, who is that knocking on the door?

Well yeah, but if you start at 9 and you figure at least an hour and a half to mow, edge, weed eat, etc...then you are looking at 10:30 or 11 by the time you are done and it is 95 degrees by then...

Myabe I should get a bigger muffler for the mower...

I believe it's city by city for noise. It's 8am here before the mowers, chainsaws, and chippers can begin.

As mentioned earlier, copper scouring pads are not solid copper. They are coated. He will get pennies per pound, if the recycling center takes them at all.

Hearing all these "neighbor" stories makes me happy to live here:
