The SUV driver is very lucky to be alive! Please read the story below.

And trust me, Shemya AFB while not the end of the earth, it is only 20 miles away from it.

Bad day for SUVs at Dugway...

Sobering shot of an SUV that got lit up by mistake, by an F16 driver near the air-ground gunnery range outside Dugway, Utah. The 'light paint and body damage' is the result of a one-quarter-second burst by the fighter's 20mm gun, which fires about 3000 rounds per minute. An estimated 70 rounds left the gun; the results are as you see here.

What's even more astonishing is - the SUV was being driven at the time.
The driver and the guy in the right-hand passenger seat escaped with some light glass injury to the driver, and a dislocated shoulder to the passenger. The shots hit the gas tank, but didn't explode; the gas just leaked out.

The passenger who normally sits in the back seat had just moved to another vehicle.

The vehicle was on the military reservation, but a full three miles away from the gunnery range.

The pilot is probably doubtless be busily writing 'I WILL NOT ENGAGE SOFT CIVILIAN VEHICLES IN NO-FIRE ZONES' 1,000 times, after which he will be PCS'd to Shemeya AFB, Alaska.

The good news is that he only had 508 plus or minus 2 rounds of ball training ammo and not HEI (high explosive incendiary)! I would imagine this event will have an impact on his career!

Speedholes or Speed Holes

While dressed as Krusty the Clown, Homer is shot at by mob assassins (under the direction of Fat Tony) as he visits a car dealership. Asking about the new bullet holes peppering the vehicle he is interested in (after they shoot and miss), Homer is told by the quick-thinking salesman that they are speedholes to make the car go faster. In reality, Buick cars are famous for having holes in the front fender, on either side. Originally they were used as air intakes but today the holes are decorative. However, more holes do indirectly imply a faster car, as on current models eight holes (four on each side) indicates a V-8 engine and six holes indicates a V-6.

when did Ford start making Suburbans?

the port holes on the older Buicks indicated trim level and motor in the past, ie Roadmaster had 4 on each side, straight 8 in those days though

OK, so long as you came through it physically unscathed (I assume the Air Force will be replacing the vehicle, do you think they have ins on F16s?), after you cleaned your shorts, that would be a helluva story to tell. "I was shot by an F16 and survived!"

Well Hill AFB does support 16's and they do sport 20MM cannon, and they shoot up Dugway all the time.

So I give it a probable.

The approach for Hill AFB is right over my house. I see all sorts of Military birds fly over all the time.

I'm calling B.S. as well. The holes in that thing are too few, too far apart, and too large to have been put there by a 20mm with that kind of cyclic rate. While a vehicle may have been strafed by an F-16 with a 20mm cannon, I don't think it was this vehicle.

i suppose they do need the practice for when they fly in Iraq or Afghanistan

it's not like the insurgents have tanks or other armoured vehicles, just is soft target car's and trucks
