Which movies have no ridiculous gun mistakes in them?
This is a huge pet peeve of mine. It's bad enough that about 80% of the movie posters and DVD cases you see on the wall at Blockbuster are of people holding guns the wrong way (100% of the time with finger on the trigger while posing). But the most basic, intelligence-insulting mistakes are made in gun-content-heavy movies and you know a lot of the folks who work those sets know about guns. WTF? I rented "Shooter" with Mark Wahlberg the other night. It started off pretty well and I was kind of impressed by the realistic gun savvy. But then he test fires a .50 cal rifle with his dog sitting a few feet away from the muzzle. Now what are the odds of that blast not exploding that dog's eardrums? Next scene he's playing with his dog.
And what's this obsession with people drawing Glocks and then you hear the sound of a hammer being cocked? PLEASE!!!! My intelligence can't take any more of a beating. And another pet peeve is the constant cocking or racking back slides on semi-auto guns that were either just fired or should have been cocked long before gunplay commenced. I mean, does a cop really run to a scene with an empty chamber, draw on a suspect and then rack the slide back to let the guy know he really means business this time? Kudos to Rambo IV. It had to be one of the bloodiest, most violent movies I've ever seen and that's because they realisically recreated what happens when human bodies are hit with .50 cal. chain guns. I think the Claymore explosion was way, way exaggerated though.

Don't even get me started on Romantic Comedies where the nice, funny, slightly less-than-good-looking average Joe gets the Supermodel.

Yes, Private Ryan was pretty good. Heat might be in there too.

I'll admit that it does chap my hide on cop shows when they are racking a round as they take position for a high-risk warrant/no knock entry scene. Yeah, that's what you want- to alert the guy inside that someone with a gun is at the door...

Filming scenes involving firearms brings a lot of factors into play, namely safety over accuracy. You have to remember, IT"S ALL MAKE BELIEVE. As a person who works on the sets and is involved with the weapons, I think I can give some insight.
First off, as far as "The Shooter" goes, when a director "sets up" or frames a scene, it's like painting a picture. Maybe he preferred the dog to be stage left or right of the actor. The weapon probably shot a 1/4 load blank if it didn't need to "cycle", so not much of a bang. If we go to 1/2 or full load, we take tampons and place them in the animalsr ears (super size for horses) and spray them with "streaks n' tips" to match their fur. Doesn't bother the animal at all, and you can shoot the scene over and over without harm. As far as hammers on Glocks, that's all "foleyed" in post production sound along with footsteps, punches, doors locking, etc. anything to accentuate the action. Racking of slides on shotguns, pistols is usually for visual or dramatic license or the simple fact that you don't want an actor who's not very familiar with the weapon to be running around, trying to hit his marks, remember his dialouge, jumping thru windows with a round in the chamber while surrounded by actors and other off camera crew. Accidents happen Very infrequently (Brandon Lee, John Erik Hexum) for the amount of gunplay that happens in movies and TV. If you PM me your address, I can send you a booklet that is used in some of the safety classes that outlines the ammo and different weapons used by the Motion Picture Industry. It's an interesting read.

RAMBO is the best archer in the history of mankind. how many rounds in a box of 50cal? he raked the hillside of villians unrealistically. and that blonde chick would have been dead from the raping.. and why did he have to make that machete? bullets dont throw dead bodies back. they simply drop.
gun movies are not realistic. realism isnt dramatic enough.

I'm no gun expert, but I seem to remember Kevin Costner making a big deal about the weapons authenticity in Dances With Wolves. Something to the effect of not wanting to fire a six shooter seven times. Although that didn't seem to bother him in Silverado, but I assume he just didn't have the control since that was Kasdan's movie.
I will say that Silverado did make me look up Henry rifles, just to see what all the fuss was about.

Best ever was Cobra. Stallone was in the back of a pick up with some small machine gun. I think it had a 24,000 round clip! He mowed down evil bikers for what seemed like 10 minutes.

Pulp Fiction was pretty good. They shot Marvin in the face because Vincent had his finger on the trigger. You might have thought Jules hit a bump, but he made it pretty clear it wasnt his fault.

The scene in Shooter that Rick Lee is referring to does not involve the .50 cartridge but a .408 CheyTac.
