According to Hammy, it seems its now Kimi's fault.

It's suspected Kimi was lined up next to Kubica to pass him, which would not be legal. Only Kimi could answer that question though.

what does it say in proverbs against arguing with a Ferrari tifosi?

Oh yes, it says that your words will be mocked.

Stupid mistake and Ham deserves the penalty without question. He ran into a parked car from behind at a stop light.

On another note, that former Benetton mechanic color commentator is starting to bug me with his obvious anti-driver bias, in favor of the holier-than-thou pit crews. They are all human and make mistakes, but in Steve's eye, the drivers are there to drive only and to shut up the rest of the time...how dare a driver make a frustrated hand gesture when the pit crew nearly blows his entire race by almost allowing him to leave with the fuel hose still in the car. They deserved the hand gesture, imo.

As important and visible as the driver is, it's still a team sport. Yes, the mechanics may have goofed a bit, but it still shouldn't be reason to piss on them. Not good for the morale. Maybe they deserved the gesture, but that doesn't mean the driver had to give it to them.

I actually like Matchett's comments most of the time...he certainly knows more than anyone else I've heard in the booth. And his books are a great read. I love it when Hobbs makes engine noises. Pretty funny crew. As for the gesture...that's racing. The red mist for the driver is easy to understand. As is the pit crew making mistakes - the pressure is huge and they are trying to manage chaos in under 7 seconds. The bottom line is that they all want to win.

You noticed that too? It was starting to get to me too. And it wasn't one comment. It was more like 3-4.

I agree, but this one time he was getting dangerously close to the line.

As for Hobbs, I'm convinced he is drunk half the time. Ever hear him start to make an inappropriate comment and start to back off? "Those tires are really sliding around. They must be colder than a witch's.................ears."

I guess there is a question of who was in front IMHO Kubica had it and I do not know if Kimi was going to back off or not, I believe they were jockeying for position, saw the red light and hit the brakes and ended up side by side. Who was going first once there was a green we will never know.

I will say Kimi did get quite the jump. ;) Thanks Hammy!!!

Actually, if you have listened to Matchett and Hobbs for a few years, they have a friendly banter that is ongoing. Matchett favors the mechanics and Hobbs, an ex-driver, favors the drivers. Each (jokingly) thinks the other is uneccesary.

Steve did get a little hot after the botched pit stop, which was unusual. He is right, in that it doesn't help team morale.

I agree, but as Todd said, in the heat of the moment, with a potential major screw up like that, it's understandable that the driver saw red and reacted with a "what the he11!" gesture. Heat of the moment stuff. Matchett's reaction was swift and very condescending to the driver, as if he were simply a trained monkey, to be tolerated only. Matchett's demonstrated this sort of attitude before and as far as I'm concerned, he may feel the way he feels, being a former mechanic, but he should keep his angry, condescending, loathing comment to himself.

I do like his insight, however. I just wish he'd keep his attitude about drivers to himself.

Lighten up Francis, its TV...

rusnak 06-09-2008 08:03 PM

I used to like Varsha, but his Frenchie sounding name pronunciations, talking over the other two guys, and obvious anti-McLaren bias along with his penchant for overblowing drama has all made him sort of excruciating to listen to. I wish F1 commentary could be more neutral, but that is not possible. At least we don't have to listen to Derek Daly (well well welllllllll) or Sam Posey anymore (sorry Sam, I hope you get well). These three jokers are sadly the best around. David 'Obbs is funny. Matchett is best doing the Chalk Talk on Speedtv.com

450knotOffice 06-09-2008 10:13 PM

Easy there, BGCarrera32. It's all in fun. Generally, I like Matchett, I have no issues with Varsha, and I really enjoy listening to Hobbs and his very British humor. ;)

rusnak 06-09-2008 10:55 PM

I think that noise Matchett makes when he expects a driver to pass another driver is sort of funny. A cross between taking a really difficult dump and maybe having sex I guess. He goes "uuuooooaaahhhh....get it get it" hahahaha
