Spike Lee is an idiot racist. In the two movies Letters from Iwo Jima and Flags of our Fathers it wasn't "soldiers" as Lee mentioned that planted the flag. It was MARINES. Back then, the USMC was highly segregated and the blacks did maintenance, kitchen detail, humping ammo, etc.

If Lee had bothered to do a modicum of research, he might have known this before he shot of his big mouth.

How anyone could watch "Do the Right Thing" and conclude that SL hates whites is beyond me. He treats the white characters quite well and berates the young blacks for trying to start racial crap over nothing in Bed Stuy Brooklyn. And he definitely does not let blacks off the hook for bad behavior, (parenting), in "He Got Game". Two great American films, IMHO.

He's all wet going after Clint, though. Clint is the man.

One question I'd have would be- "Were there black units serving in that specific action?"

It was a movie, and movies are allowed only a certain number of main characters and sub-plots to be cohesive.
Unfortunately, nowadays some films rely on a very limited amount of the above, and are confined to being "politically correct" to the point of a two-hour yawn, "Letters" and "Flags" being no exception. I admire the effort and intent though.

Spike was correct in pointing out that there was racial segregation even back from the civil war. Some of the limited black and japanese units served with noteworthy distinction, although it took a long time to publicly recognize them. After WW2 the US military became fully integrated. A milestone.
