The weather has been horrible this year. It's been raining every-other day like clockwork. Once a week we get a bad storm with 2+ inches of water. Last Thursday, we got 6 inches in 8 hours. The ground is saturated and bad things are going to start happening if we get any more rain. Iowa and Indiana have been hit worse so far, but we may still get it.
On the plus side, I've been able to grow new grass from seed in June without any watering...

I actually used to go camping at that Scout camp back in the day. It was a really nice place, about an hour north of Omaha. It sounds like most all of the buildings up there were destroyed, and it's terrible that so many kids were killed or injured.

![]() It's very sad that those kids had little or no warning, and no safe place to hide from the danger. I guess it's still hard to always have sufficient warning of tornadoes.

What a year. My in-laws in Claflin,KS went to the basement three times last night. Second time this week, and probably the 10th tornado warning they've been through this spring, one year after their small town had significant damage from the same system that destroyed Greensburgh. My father in law left the house after tornado #1 to help neighbors in the rural area to the north whose homes were damaged/destroyed. He spent tornado #2 hiding out in half of a destroyed shed with others, watching baseball sized hail beat up his truck. Another local man and his son were on their way to help, and were caught in tornado #2. Their truck was thrown into a ditch, and they escaped in time to see it blown down a road.
Chapman, KS took a direct hit, with an estimated 70% of the town taking serious damage, and one death reported. Manhattan KS (my hometown) was also hit, with homes and businesses totally destroyed. The campus of K-State has serious damage to numerous buildings. Many storm pictures here of the KS tornados. http://wibw.mycapture.com/mycapture/photos/Album.aspx?EventID=270426&CategoryID=34912 It's been a wild spring, even by KS standards. My heart really goes out to those in IA with kids at the scout camp, I can't imagine anything worse.

Very sad day
![]() We just had our OSHA VPP audit and one thing they really hit on was severe weather shelter areas. We have hurricanes, but we don't think much about tornados. I had to go over the building drawings, find appropriate shelter areas, and mark them. Not something you want to wait to do until a storm hits.

We got our chance last night. Wichita had the sirens activated, and spotty damage across the south side of town. Not close enough to head to the basement, but we spent another evening watching the radar.
You know what I love about the midwest? By Thursday afternoon, less than 24 hours after a tornado hit Manhattan, volunteers were directed to meet at city hall to be distributed across town to help with cleanup. Reportedly there was overwhelming response from the community. No waiting for the National Guard or FEMA, just neighbors helping neighbors.
