Buying a shotgun in Cali, do I need to take the test?
OK as part of my earthquake preparedness kit I bought a 20" Remington 870 at Big 5.
So I am going through all the fun paperwork... are you a terrorist... are you a felon... are you mentally unstable... are you going to try to over throw the government. No, no, no, and no. We finish the paperwork, he takes my thumb print, I sign and initial in all the appropriate places, I pay the man and he says "you can pick up the gun in two weeks." I was a little surprised as in "is that all there is to it?" I passed the old handgun test with flying colors is the new test still for handguns only? (No test for long guns?) Or are they going to give me a quiz when I go to pick up the gun?

Why the two week wait? Is that some California law? Up here in Washington, we can walk out with long guns the same day. Handguns, too, if you have a CCW. Is it on backorder or something? And what test are you talking about? Is a test required to simply own a handgun, or just to carry one? We have nothing like that up here. Walk in, ask to buy one, pass NICS, pay your money, grab the gun, and leave. Not much more complicated than buying a new hammer.

Tobra - if you arent gonna buy local, buy *now* - Cali is forcing every licensed dealer/distributer/etc. who ships a firearm to a FFL in Cali to get an approval letter first - for each shipment! Many of teh dealers on the gunbroker forums are saying they will no longer do business with anyone in Cali because of this...

Excellent shotgun, almost bought that one. Went with the winchester "defender" instead.
Private party though, don't know about the restrictions. |

Jeff,
In Cali, two weeks waiting on ANY firearm. You have to pass a written test to buy a handgun, I passed the test many years ago but they have updated it so if I want to buy another handgun I will need to take the test again. The old test was laughably easy. A long time ago I walked into the local army surplus store, I see a 9mm auto there that had very good reviews in the gun magazines so I bought it. The guy behind the counter says I can come back and take the test anytime between now and when I pick the gun up. He gives me a little pamphlet to study for the test, I walk a couple a doors down to the brewpub and down a couple of frosty ones while reviewing the pamphlet. After two beers I'm thinking "this is just silly" so I walk back up to the store and tell the guy "I'll take the test". Bink, bink, bink, I check all the right boxes, hand him back the test and Hurray I passed. Scary thing is there was a guy at the counter taking the test when I bought my hand gun and in the time it took me to walk down to the pub, have a couple of beers, and walk back... we both finish at the same time... and he didn't pass. ![]() Anyone have a link to the new Calif. hand gun test?

Is there a Big 5 near you?
Remington 870 8-shot 20" $339 regular $399. They keep taking them on and off sale so I jumped on it. Funny thing is I was having beer and pizza next door and just popped in to see if they had put it back on sale. I'm sure the guy could smell the beer on my breath while we were filling out the paperwork. ![]()

$339? Time to pick one up.
10 day waiting period, not 2 weeks. The store is wrong. One handgun every 30 days, have to have completed the hand gun safety test. No restrictions on long guns, no test. |

All firearms purchases and transfers, including private party transactions and sales at gun shows, must be made through a licensed dealer under the Dealer Record of Sale (DROS) process. California imposes a 10-day waiting period before a firearm can be released to a buyer or transferee. A person must be at least 18 years of age to purchase a rifle or shotgun. To buy a handgun, a person must be at least 21 years of age, and either 1) possess an HSC plus successfully complete a safety demonstration with the handgun being purchased or 2) qualify for an HSC exemption.
As part of the DROS process, the buyer must present "clear evidence of identity and age" which is defined as a valid, non-expired California Driver's License or Identification Card issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles. A military identification accompanied by permanent duty station orders indicating a posting in California is also acceptable. If the buyer is not a U.S. Citizen, then he or she is required to demonstrate that he or she is legally within the United States by providing to the firearms dealer with documentation that contains his/her Alien Registration Number or I-94 Number. Purchasers of handguns are also required to provide proof of California residency, such as a utility bill, residential lease, property deed, or government-issued identification (other than a drivers license or other DMV-issued identification). http://ag.ca.gov/firearms/pubfaqs.php |

Yeah, 10 days... my bad... I'll blame the beer.
I already have the pick up date put into my outlook calender to remind me. ![]() The San Pedro store had several, he pulled a box out of the back room (he had to get the serial number for the paperwork). I felt like a kid at Christmas. Anyone have recommendation for ammo?

From the way things sound in California, my only recommendation would be to buy as much as you can afford.

I paid $180 for my 870 in 12 ga. new from Dick's Sporting goods two years ago. $339 is pretty steep IMO.

I figure if 6 rounds with a shotgun aren't enough I'm in bigger trouble than I can deal with. Plus I've always got six magazines with 10 each for the p226 and four mags with 8 each for the p225. Oh, and Calvin manning the Walther
