I shot my first 12 ga on a Thanksgiving day under my dad's guidance in the fields on my grandfather's farm when I was 9 years old...I remember it well even though it's been almost 40 years. When "paw-paw" passed away a few years later, I received his shotgun, a 16 ga double barrel farmer's "work gun" that had been passed down from my great, great, great grandfather :)

Hey Jack, no offense, but, your just one of "those guys" you know them and there is nothing wrong with them, they cannot do much casually they have to go in 110%. I see them everywhere, on the golf course, they are the guys with the newest Pings and cloths to match, on the ski slopes they have the best gear there is, at the Raquet Ball courts they have the best Raquet made on earth.

We see it when we go karting too, (see I do LOTS of different things) We have older worn out Karts that go pretty quick, but are not the fastest by any stretch, we only go out to play on practice nights, I do it mostly for laughs and also to keep my reflexes fast, after driving a kart a car seems like slow motion. But there are guys there with 10K+ Karts, 3-5K driving suits, 2K helmets, everything they are wearing is Alpine Star or Puma they would nto be caught dead with the cheaper stuff even though it is just as safe.

Some guys choose one hobby and go in to it hard core, some can afford many hobbies and do the same, still others cannot do any type of sport without competing with everyone around them.

I just like trying lots of different things and having fun. But I understand the competition thing I get like that with certain things, but I get a kick out of doing more with less.

Target shooting is not Plinking. What you are talking about is called plinking, just shooting to see what happens, if you hit it fine, if not, try again. You can plink with any gun, but you cannot target shoot with any gun, no matter what your skill is. EG you cannot beat a F1 car with a VW diesel, no matter who you are.

What is the point of trying to hit the center of a target if the gun, in a vice, draws a 3" circle around the center? Thats kind of whats typical of a hunting gun with off the shelf ammo. If you do hit the center with such a gun, its luck, not skill.

Plinking is fun.

Here is an example of a target guns performance. Its a pellet gun, the distance was twice the 5Meters stated, ie 10Meters. Note the center target. Two pellets went thru that hole. Thats the guns capability (and the shooter, with some luck). The other targets reflect the shooters performance, but are still good. THats a target gun. A $50 Beeman pellet rifle will never do this, it will not even keep it in the 6 ring. You would never know what your actual skill is.

The same argument can be made for Golf, Karting, road racing, Raquetball, and on and on...

Like I said, some are hard core some like to just have fun.

Jim, I like your attitude about this. It's for fun. When it gets serious, like snowman's bluster about competition, it's not really all that much fun anymore.

I have lot's of activities that I do for pure enjoyment that I would NEVER, ever want to do "in competition" for that very reason. I DO have a competitive side however, but just don't want to screw up my "fun things" with all that comes with "winning" :)

I'm not very competitive as in "don't care if I win" and I'm suprised when I do. I must confess, I did get some satisfaction from beating guys using highly modified "race guns" with optical sights with my bone stock revolver with iron sights.
I spent my shooting money on ammo. ;)

4th. it does keep criminals at bay (seems that there was an interview with a bunch of cons...they fer us with guns more-so than cops!

Yup, that's how I like to shoot too. Most of my handguns have some work done to them, but none are race guns. I have a lot that are refinished with night sights, two with trigger jobs, but that's it. I love being in a lane next to someone with a race gun that costs the same as three or four of my guns combined and then outshooting them. As it goes with seat time on the track vs. car mods, I'd rather spend my money on ammo and range time to get good.

You can target shoot against your self. How many times can you hit dead center. Its no fun if the gun walks all around the target. I can shoot better than most guns can, so whats the fun if you point it and its like a craps game, it lands wherever it does. If you want a plinking gun, thats great, it will hit a tin can or whatever, but it won't hit dead center like that middle target I posted. THats what makes it fun, how many bullets can you put in ONE hole. Anyone can hit the paper, or a tin can, still fun, but not as much fun. A $3,000 pellet gun can be had by anyone, not exactly a rich mans sport.

Why would you golf with a set of $200 JC Penney clubs when you will never be able to hit that perfect shot, and if you do it was pure luck. Your probably adding 10 strokes to every game and it would get frustrating fast making you bored with the game. I mean come on, how many times can you hit the same ball.......


Why would you drive a 10 year old racing Kart only for practice days? Its no where near as fast as the brand new $15,000 ones and you will be getting lapped all the time during the session. Besides, how many times can you go around the same track before your bored out of your mind?


Maybe I used to wrong term, excuse me for being a newb. I meant plinking not target shooting, I am in it for the fun of it not the competition, like most things I mess around with. I just like trying lots of different things.

How would you like to drive a car that went right when you steer left? and which way the car goes is completely random, but almost never the way you point it? Thats target shooting with a typical hunting rifle. Of course a good Weatherby is a hunting rifle that also shoots much like a target gun, but its not a typical hunting or plinking rifle.

Driving a Yugo in an autocross is probably not as much fun as it should be.

However driving in any autocross with any car can be fun.

Marlins are the most accurate guns for the money period... then would be Savage.... then would be Ruger and so on... some on else continue as I need more Tequila......
