LANSING, Mich. (June 19) - The winner of last week's $57 million Mega Millions lottery jackpot is a registered sex offender who also pleaded guilty to two breaking and entering charges in the 1980s.

Fred Topous Jr., 45, was discharged from Michigan Department of Corrections supervision in October 2006.

Lottery WinnersMichigan Lottery / APRegistered sex offender Fred Topous Jr. won the $57 million Mega Millions jackpot from the June 13 drawing. The ex-con's rap sheet includes assault with intent to commit sexual penetration, and breaking and entering. He will take a $34 million payout. | Flip through to see other lottery winners.

The Kent City man traveled to Lansing on Tuesday to claim the prize from Friday's drawing in the multistate game. Topous chose to take the prize as a $34 million lump sum payment, before taxes.

Topous said he planned to buy a house, send his children to college and have some fun with his winnings. He said he and his wife work multiple jobs to make ends meet and thought they'd have to work till they died.

"I want to enjoy a little bit of life," Topous told state lottery officials. "We're plain folks. We've struggled all our lives."

According to the Corrections Department's offender profile, Topous pleaded guilty to breaking and entering charges in 1984 and 1988 and to assault with intent to commit sexual penetration in 1999. In the latter case, Topous was charged with having sex with a 13-year-old girl, USA Today reported.

In before the Roman Polanski comments........

In town here a teenager killed an old lady and tried to burn her body in an effort to hide her.

She yelled at him for playing his boom box too loud walking down the sidewalk.

His parents hit the lottery, twice. Both times it was shoveled over to F.U. Baily in West Palm Beach to try to get their little angel out of prison.

In before Mule starts yelling at Dottore.

That $34 Million will be gone before you can say "she wanted it."

1999 to 2006? He was about 36. A 13 year old?

They should put sentencing guidelines to the voters. 89% of the citizens would pull the lever for "life without parole".

Fact A) He did his time and was released in 2006.
Fact B) He won the lottery in 2008.

The only problem I see is that he claimed the money instead of tying it up in a trust.

Small world isn't it?

My sis-in-law dated a cousin of theirs, I do not want to get in trouble here with liable type statements but they "seemed" connected if you catch my drift.

That kids mom and dad own a pretty successful bakery in town and supply most of the restaurants as well as retail.

Let ye who be without sin cast the first stone.
I'd bet there are a whole lot of people out there that "deserve" to win the lottery more than most of us. Like Clint said, "deserves got nuthin to do with it".

The lottery is more of a curse than a blessing.
It doesn't solve problems, it gives you more expensive ones.
If I won the lottery i wouldn't be any happier than I am right now.

I, too, would be no happier than I am now if Sammy won the lottery.

Based on your PPOT posts, I don't think you've ever been happy.

I have read numerous papers that indicate child molesters never lose the urge to do so.

If he was ordered to pay restitution can they still sue him now? wouldn't that be like double dipping or suing twice just because they didn't get enough the first time around?

Restitution is a criminal remedy.

They can still seek a civil remedy, ala OJ.

I disagree. If they were going to sue, they should have already done so.

Well I dunno, that saying "money can't buy you happiness, but it sure as hell can buy your choice of misery", always comes to fore in these instances.

Agreed. He went to prison and served his time. If he has done nothing since let him alone. Hope he learned his lesson and is a changed man.
