Funny, but completely invalid logic when you think about it.
Stealing merchandise screws the retailer, not the "rich" companies producing the product as he implies. Do I think artists should be compensated for their work? Absolutely. But IMHO it's quite hard for an entity like the RIAA or MPAA to claim any sort of "moral high ground" when all they're really doing is defending a system that allows THEM (exclusively) to steal from the artists, exploit them, manipulate them and force them to do all the work while they do little but sit back on their arses and collect the lion's share of the checks for someone else's work. The artists that are bypassing the mainstream distribution channels (held hostage by RIAA/MPAA) and going direct to the fans are the ones who are ultimately doing the best thing for both themselves, their profession/art and the fans. The faster the "fat cats" get cut out of the loop, the better the rest of us will be. That's one good thing to come out of the computer/information age - the technology is there to get rid of the exploitive dinosaurs. And the smart artists are doing just that.

As well, he's good friends with the guys from Lynard Skynard, so I doubt he actually stole the sample from them.

I wouldn't steal Kid Rock's music with a ten foot pole and someone else's Comcast.

My impression is he's being completely serious, just sarcastic/satirical the whole time. It's funny, but I think he's trying to make a point rather than simply make a joke. . .
The MPAA/RIAA have subsisted for years like leeches only because they were a "necessary evil". Well, they're no longer necessary thanks to technological innovation. Time to kill the leech.

I got a laugh out of this video...not what I expected... seems like he was being sarcastic to make his 'point' but a lot of kids probably wont see that and will consider it a blessing to steal music online.
Regarding music companies...they will soon be obsolete, replaced by management/marketing companies that work with the artist to promote touring, merchandising, packaging things with music for downloads etc. all designed to maximize the artists actual value (and total package)... smart artists are already gravitating that way. Ive changed my tune (no pun intended) on illegal-downloading recently... its not going to completely kill legit record sales... computer virus' on the PC will ensure that if you download free...you are taking a risk for your computer cause you dont know exactly what you are going to get with that download. kind of like unprotected sex... but the record company will soon be obsolete in its current state, and legit downloads will be via other venues or from the artist itself. Who needs a record company anyway?... well...new artists trying to find a sound or exposure, 'could' need a record company... actually they quite usually do... but that model will eventually be outsourced to production teams and marketing firms not the old A and R guy. I just downloaded Madonna's Hard Candy tonight... illegally... just to see how it sounds. Its OK as far as dance trax go...her voice seems to be losing its edge and is much more rounded out now, like a vocalist who is not staying on top of her instrument... the production is tight and there are some tight grooves....but the sound.... the sound...is predictably AWFUL> overcompressed garbage....really bad. its going in my computer waste basket...i just wanted to check it out anyway to see if she is still a major artist (in an artistic sense not commercial sense)... i actually think she could be just not with this type of packaging... just my 2 cents... why dont we steal away...in to the night Last edited by Sonic dB; 06-26-2008 at 01:07 AM.. |

My son showed the video to me after he saw it on the G4 channel, that is probably why it has so many hit already.

I support musician's by going to concerts they have. By my understanding they make more from them than from what ever little bit the RIAA hands over to them.

Probably true (and maybe Gogar or someone in the know can comment more accurately here) but my understanding is that the producers take a very large cut of those proceeds as well. Back in high school a friend of mine was a live-in nanny for Don Law - a big producer in the Boston area (same guy who went on to create Next Ticketing, challenging TicketMaster in that market and killing their monopolistic control of venues there). This guy is literally worth tens (if not hundreds) of millions of dollars. His house is palatial (I've been to it). You don't get that kind of scratch from just getting a small cut, if you know what I mean. . .

The recording industry needs to come to grips with the fact that illegal downloading is not the main problem.
I like what Wierd Al has to say: www.youtube.com/watch?v=0C93_0L2Z9c
