It is why country music is so big... its the mass appeal music for the mass audience consumption along with a 40 ouncer or two. Man I grew up in Detroit and the 4 major FM stations played all of that stuff... Classic Rock 24/7 WCSX, its the WRRRIIIFFF baby! As far as "emo" I had read that "Jimmy Eats....etc" was the band that started that genre about 10 years ago, so I listened to some of their cuts and didnt really like it...maybe they are not emo these days...anyway doesnt matter. let it rock! |

BTW, I didn't see anyone mention Michael Bolton or Kenny G. Talk about a few guys I just want to beat to death with my shoes. I actually like U2. I want to beat Bono when I see him do anything other than make music. But I like a lot of their songs and I have to admire their longevity. |
Rick Astley.

those mordern pop rock crap
blink 18whatever and stuff like it |
I have to second Boston. I never liked their guitar sound at all. And let me throw Lynard Skynard into it too, not for guitar sound, just generally crappy redneck rock.
|
Skynard?
You should be beaten about the head and neck with a rubber chicken until dead DaveE. ;) |

Boston is ***** for sure! Can't tell one song from another.
Seger makes me physically ill. Van HAGAR sucks so bad it's hard to fathom. Pop music pretending to be 'rock' is sad. Happened to Metallica too. Old stuff was great; new stuff belongs in an elevator. |

As to the Beatles there are, IMO, 3 types of Beatles music. The kiddie music from early on (hold your hand, etc), the GOOD stuff (Abbey Road) and the crapola that Lennon had too much influence on. |
I was going to ask what a "post smoker" was...and add that I bet they could at least spell it correctly....gotcha before the edit :)

Michael and kenny who? As far as U2, Bono can bite the big one AFAIK because some idiot told him it was OK to tell the rest of the world what his views are of politics. He's not much different than that stupid bald-headed chick that made an a$$ of herself on SNL. Same goes for every other musician who thinks their music is a platform to express their political views. Their business, not mine so keep it that way. Don't care what they think and don't want to hear it. Jackson Brown can ESAD because he came out at every opportunity against nuke plants (and is totally uninformed about the same subject), same goes for the anti-war hippie-cowards of the 60's. IMO Musicians should play music and keep their mouth shut about politics and everything will be fine. If they want to express themselves they can do it in their music, and i can choose to listen or not. What's wrong with that? I don't want to pay money to go to a concert and get a left-wing liberal lecture instead. They make music. That's all. They get this stupid idea that a life of drugs and music and little education makes them an expert on everything. Have the dixie chicks received their MENSA memberships yet? |

Problem was, the next album was exactly the same. And the next. Not enough influence from the other members. I spoke to Tom and Fran on the phone while they were recording the second album (IIRC). A bassist I was jamming with at the time was a friend of Tom's and very good friends with Fran. They told me of a bunch of nuts recording in the next studio, drinking and partying and breaking stuff all the time and making it real hard to get good tracks. They said the band's name was "The Cars". Little anecdote there. From WIKI Early Years (pre-1976) Boston began when Tom Scholz, an MIT engineering graduate who worked at Polaroid, began composing songs and recording demos where he played all of the instruments, except the drums. He was joined by Jim Masdea, who played drums, and singer Brad Delp who methodically overdubbed the vocals. This was all done in Scholz’s home studio. The roots of the first album were created in these early demo sessions with songs such as "More than a Feeling," "Hitch a Ride," "Peace of Mind," "Foreplay/Long Time" and "Rock & Roll Band". Scholz soon became frustrated with the limitations of the technology at the time and his inability to capture the sound he wanted, so he began building and designing his own equipment. The first tapes Scholz sent out were rejected by the record labels. A second set of tapes drew the attention of executives at Epic Records, a division of CBS. The label was dissatisfied with Masdea's performance though, so he was replaced, first by David Currier, then by Sib Hashian. The label also insisted that Scholz re-record the demo tapes in a professional studio with a full band, which led to the hiring of bassist Fran Sheehan and guitarist Barry Goudreau, the latter of whom had played in a band with Scholz and worked on earlier demos with him. With the exception of "Let Me Take You Home Tonight", which was recorded in California under the direction of producer John Boylan, Scholz re-recorded the other seven tracks in his home studio with only Delp & Hashian (with Goudreau making an appearance on "Foreplay/Long Time"). CBS also insisted upon the name change to Boston. Up to this point the group had been calling themselves Mother's Milk. It should be noted that only Tom Scholz and Brad Delp were signed to the record contract with Epic. This debut album turned the disco crazed music industry on its head and broke all the known rules for succeeding in the world of rock n' roll. Its seemingly sudden and relentless success belied six years of abject failure and quickly made it the model abducted, imitated and used by marketing executives to mass produce radio friendly "corporate rock." |
