Americans are the world's top consumers of cannabis and cocaine despite punitive US drug laws, according to an international study published in the online scientific magazine PLoS Medicine.

The study, released Monday, revealed that 16.2 percent of Americans had tried cocaine at least once, and 42.4 percent had used marijuana.

Drug laws don't work. IMHO. Something else needs to be done. But too may people are making money on fighting drugs. It's a big industry.

The data also revealed socioeconomic patterns in drug use. Single young adult men with high income had the greatest tendency to regularly use drugs.

Drug use "does not appear to be simply related to drug policy," the researchers wrote, "since countries with more stringent policies toward illegal drug use did not have lower levels of such drug use than countries with more liberal policies."

In the Netherlands, where drug policy is more liberal than the United States, 1.9 percent of survey participants said they had used cocaine and 19.8 percent marijuana.

I wonder if people who have more frequent sex have less of a desire to do drugs.

The reliability of such surveys is highly questionable. Being asked if they have done drugs, I bet Americans are more prone to bragging and boasting than people in the Netherlands who have a more natural and laid back attitude toward drugs.

I never tried any drugs but good ole alcohol!
But I see weed being smoked almost daily here in SF, by either friends or at some of the bars out here. I see cocaine use every time I go out to a nightclub. Very big problem out here. People forget the past, when folks in the late 70's early 80's lost it all from that *****.

I will take this opportunity to ask you gentlemen about the phrase: 'Donīt bogart the joint'. Not sure I spell 'bogart' correctly. I think I know the meaning of it, but the only bogart I knew of was a drunk skipper on a small boat in Africa many moons ago.

The war on drugs is an expensive, wasteful debacle that has done more harm than it will ever do good. Take every cent being wasted on it, give half to rehab programs, and half to childrens' hospitals. My idea right there is better than anything that has been proposed by any buffoons running for office.
