Happy 4th July, guys! Help me out, please!

Here in Sweden its only a couple of hours left of 3 July. I thought IŽd be the first to wish you a happy holiday, being a for'ner and all.

Trying my best over the last years to fit in on an American forum language and attitude wise - I thought the next step would be tradition wise. In honor of you guys and Pelican Parts, I have therefore (silly enough) decided I will celebrate 4th July.

Problem is I donŽt know how. Are there any traditional items, routines, food or drinks that I should consider? Or is it plenty to just get reasonably drunk and sing the National anthem..?

Thanks!

Basically drink large amounts of cheap corn & rice based beer.

Then make effigies of King George III and douse with cheap rye for a good bonfire...

Somewhere toward the middle of those activities grill a few burgers and dogs over a little charcoal.

It's all about fluffing, cratch slapping (slap slap slap, like that) and guns. Hurry up.

Casual play with explosives is expected after consuming intoxicating beverages.

Good thing you are a Dr.

Part of the tradition dictates that someone needs to lose a couple of fingers to an explosive.

Cheers.

I think I have a pretty good handle on it by now. There are some essential things you will need:

1. Friends and/or family
2. A grill
3. Beer
4. Fireworks

Once you have those combine them however you see fit.

Have a great day!

Markus, PLEASE ,really please...
do not drink lots of Beer..followed by 'watch this...'
while this is a common American pastime, it's often unhealthy..
results are often explained in # of sutures received,
lenght and duration of cast, or # of no longer fuctioning limb's.

Happy 4th

Rika has perfectly described how to celebrate the 4th-

1) Drink Beer
2) "Watch this!"
3) Fun

Rockets red glare; Bombs bursting in air....

Our country is based/founded on blowing things up. It's even in our anthem. On the 4th most of us have blown something up at some point to celebrate Independence Day.

Traditionally, one grills burgers, drinks weak but very cold beer, goes to the beach or river or pool, sees a movie (I would suggest "Independence Day") or an outdoor concert, and watches a fireworks display.

Some folks also like to take their guns and fire some rounds straight up into the sky. However, this is generally acknowledged as A Bad Idea. In the West, firing off one's own fireworks is also considered A Bad Idea since this is fire season.

I celebrated New Years in Germany once and that was a lot like we do the Fourth.

Keep a good day long buzz going, blow some stuff up, ride some type of recreational vehicle, play some type of back yard game (I prefer Badminton), and grill some meat.

You could do dry-ice bombs out west if you have fire problems... get one plastic soda bottle, put dry ice in there, add hot water, put on cap, run away and wait. BOOM!!! and no fire.

Markus, that is awesome that you would take the time to celebrate with us!!

As a gesture of international solidarity with Sweden (thanks for inventing large-breasted blondes and those meatballs BTW) I promise to celebrate svenska flaggans dag next June 6th (sorry I misssed it this year).

Or if there is a corresponding holiday that you could suggest later on this year, I will go for it!!

My Grandmother on my father's side is Swedish and I'm woefully ignorant of my own heritage, sorry to say.

People eat picnic style food, burgers, hot dogs etc, cooked out doors on grill, apropriate frosty cold beverages, kids run around with sparklers, make home made ice cream, try to calm down the dog. City/County/Chamber of Commerce/Elks Club will do bgi fireworks display or parade in many areas.

Under no circumstances should you allow my wife to make 5 gallons of lemon drops(vodka and lemonade, tastes like lemonade), or everyone will be passed out drunk before it gets dark out.

I think that it is important to take a moment to reflect upon the principles the USA was founded. Perhaps read the Declaration of Independence either to yourself or to your family.

Then drink beer, eat hot dogs, wave the flag and let off or watch fireworks. Oh and call up your British friends to rub it in but not too much or they might decide to charge us royalties for using their language.
