Nice way to color this article with your thread title, Shaun.
All you'll hear from returning troops is shock at how different Iraq is from what we're fed here. Apparently the son of one of my dad's friends just got back and was thrilled about the situation he left, and very disappointed at the portrayal/spin going on in MSM. Nevermind the surge for a minute. When we went in, especially after GHWB/Desert Storm, Iraqis had low expectations - either of being hung out to dry like last time, or us seizing their assets (ie, oil pumps), or both. Instead, we've turned over their oil industry back to them and we've hung with them doggedly, despite the brazen PR campaign against these efforts. This has really surprised and energized the Iraqi people, government, and military - in a very positive way. Maliki said so, in fact - but you didn't hear anything about that from CNN or NYT. They've built up their confidence and they've started taking control of their country. Naturally, this will involve transfer of control back to Maliki's govt. This isn't bad news or cause for an 'I told you so'. US forces want to make sure Iraqi forces aren't biting off more than they can handle. No problem. They'll work it out. But ignore the facts and testimonials. Bush lied, people died, we did it for the oil, yada yada. Shrill on.

This is great news! Obviously the Iraqis feel that the conditions have improved to the point where they do not need our assistance much longer. Looks like President Bush was successful. Mission accomplished!

Fine with me. I don't care how it's spun, as long as we leave...

I'm glad to see them take some responsibility, and not be content letting us police their country. My sincere hope is that they WANT freedom and peace, and will fight to maintain it. Of course, that's a question that will only be answered after we leave.
If Iraq does succeed as a soverign nation, how will the MSM spin it into a disaster? Worse yet, how will they convince everyone that Bush is/was the antichrist if Iraq actually works? History may have a much different view of GWB than many of our current media and related sheep.
