On second thought.... go get him! I just did a little online research on this man and he was not just following orders, he went over that bound drastically and did things so horrible I will not mention them here.

I admire the tenacity of the folks still after men like this. Jews will not, and should not ever just let this go. If only other ethnic groups were as well represented in the hunt for genocidal maniacs that have caused untold death and suffering amongst them. Unfortunately, the suffering of the Jews under Hitler represent only a small fraction of the numbers that have been similarly persecuted. They just seem to be the only ones with the means, the wherewithall, and the determination to never give up. Good for them.

The US also held Clause Barbi, the Butcher of Lyon, before his "emigration" to South America. It turns out that many top Nazi war criminals were captured by the US and protected by military intelligence because of their perceived intelligence value with regard to the Soviets, even as the other branches of the government were searching for them. Barbie was on the US payroll for years, apparently as a bribe for his cooperation, even though there was a death sentence waiting for him. Which should have been all the incentive he needed to cooperate. No need for ODESSA when you have the US intelligence community on your side.

Josef Mengele came from a pretty well off family and they still have a big business going in Germany. I was sitting on a train from Munich to Klagenfurt when we were passing by Chiemsee. Out the window I saw this huge warehouse-like building with "MENGELE" in huge blue letters on it. Kinda gave me the shivers. You'd think some folks would have a problem doing business with a company like that. Not the family's or kids' fault about the father. But that business did support him when he was living in S. America.

ODESSA is an amazing story too.

Didn't Barbi die in prison a few years ago? IIRC, he was held in the same prison he commanded during the occupation. Gotta relish that one.

I think he did. I read the fictional spy novel "The Company" by Robert Littell. Littell is an ex-intelligence correspondent and the novel is written in a way to suggest that it is based on fact. In the book an American CIA officer trades Barbi's location to an Israeli operative for information that helps save an American in Soviet custody. I hope his capture did come about something like that. It would take a little of the blood off our hands.

To this day there is a small group of prosecutors within the Justice Department called the Special Investigative Unit. The SIU is dedicated to capturing escaped Nazis. They still get a conviction or two each year. Their most successful year came in about 1992 when they got access to the former Soviet records. They won't be disbanded until it is clear all the bad guys are accounted for.
