Not really a product malfunction but more of an infrastructure overload.
Launching a new product worldwide in 70 countries along with downloads of 2.0 software for iPhone 1 as well as global activation of all iPhone 2s and finally the launch of the iTunes App Store in one day strained the system. What until the dust settles; the sales numbers will probably be extremely positive. Best, |

More "Made in China" electronics junk that people don't need. Amazing. I like Apple as a company, but it never ceases to amaze me how insatiable the American appetite is for electronic crap that will be obsolete in 12 months.
I saw a report recently that said that even on the discounted iPhones, Apple makes about $80 pure profit on each one. The manufacturers in China that run the sweatshop get about $12 for each, IIRC.

Not a single customer in sight. They all looked like.... ![]() ![]() ![]()

i have a ton of apple products, and make my living with them. but the idea of waiting overnight in line is just insane.
will have to get an iphone eventually. like the idea of an interface that isn't designed for a 12 year old texting obsessed girl, and that doesn't try to sell me something every time i mistype.

The fact that Apple has created a model by which they keep the lion's share of the profits "domestic" for their IP, while the foreign manufacturers keep a much smaller share is good, IMO. It is also admirable that Apple has created many products that, by virtue of the software, UI and aesthetic design, people are willing to pay a price that allows Apple to earn a significant profit. I like capitalism this way. ![]() The real story continues to be about the software, though. |

![]() Again, the problem in the past couple of days is infrastructure centered and based upon wild demand . . . and probably some poor planing trying to do so much simultaneously. There will certainly be glitches with the product, like that of any newly launched piece of electronics. |

That is very surprising since worldwide reports are of stores selling out early and the stores with iPhones had/have multi-hour lines. Here's a report from two WA state stores: Quote:
http://www.engadget.com/2008/07/11/iphone-activation-servers-back-online-stock-updates-from-around/ I'll try to get one next week after the lines thin out. I am not that much in a hurry to have the new one, since 2.0 works great on iPhone1. Best, |

Translation: They finally have something that sells in large enough numbers to expose the problems.

iPhone2 hits 1M sales mark on Sunday, a benchmark which took 74 days for iPhone1. Launching in 21 countries greatly helped.
The App store logged 10M downloads over the weekend. FYI. Best, |

Mixed emotions. Part of me laughed at the sheep who compulsively have to have the latest and greatest gizmo so much that they would stand in line for hours to get it, and part of me felt pity for them.

Was it released in Japan? I've never seen a population more devoted to their mobile devices.
