An MPG algerbra problem?
I borrowed a neighbor's 5.4L V8 truck to pick up a trailer. It was a 100 mile round trip. When I got in the truck, the average MPG on the computer was 13.3mpg. When I was done, I had gotten it up to 13.7. Is there enough information to tell what mpg I got over my 100 miles?

No, you need to know the previous mileage that gave the 13.3 value. That might or might not be what was on the odometer.

Not exactly, but if you assume there were about 100 miles on the counter before you started , getting 14.1 mpg over your trip would work out. That shouldn't be too far off at any rate.

What Mike B said was correct. You have to know what the previous miles driven was to be able to determine how your hundred miles would have affected the total.

That's what I figured. There was 50000 miles on the odometer I doubt my hypermiling affected it that much. In all seriousness, I didn't think this was solvable, but wanted to make sure. Owner tells me when driven gingerly, he can get 18 mpg on the highway. This was mostly highway and a 4x4 Harbor Frieght trailer (would've fit in the bed!) so maybe I was doing 18 mpg. I squeezing in 5 gallons of gas, but it wasn't full when I picked it up. thanks

You're a sharp shooter today. Just how often do you sharpen? What's left of the tool?
