AT&T and NY keep me safe from porn.

Thursday's announcement covers AT&T Inc., the nation's largest access provider, and Time Warner Inc.'s AOL, the third largest. They follow similar agreements last month with Verizon Communications Inc., Sprint Nextel Corp. and Time Warner Cable Inc. Although the agreements are with New York officials, they are expected to apply to all customers nationwide. AT&T spokesman Marty Richter said the company would disabled all those with addresses starting with "alt.binary," which is where child-porn images are often exchanged. But not all such groups have child pornography. Thank you, AT&T. When I went to alt.binaries.pictures.auto this morning, I was pleased to know that I would not accidentally see any child porn. Oh, and the fact that the auto group and the entire hierarchy that it belongs to was completely gone... well, that was just a minor inconvenience.

People still use newsgroups for pictures, especially car pictures? I search newsgroups for tech info using Google Groups, but it seems to me as if forums like this one have made newsgroups obsolete.

There are a few tech groups that I check on from time to time - they are mostly in the REC hierarchy. Some groups still stay active, but are definitely not what they used to be.
Pictures are a huge load in the alt.binaries hierarchy... ...as is also piracy of MP3, DVD, software, and console games. Much of the buzz on the net is that blocking of this hierarchy has as much or more to do with the piracy as it does with the child porn issue.

Just another reason for me to cancel my ATT account...
More frigging censorship and a knee jerk reaction at that! How about closing down the groups where there are photos of this posted, and not every frigging one!

One more reason for the change is buzzing on the net: that the binaries represent a huge amount of bandwidth load that they can now cut out.
