iTunes is 'restoring to factory settings' as I type (hehe, not quite factory)

It's stupidly simple to jailbreak this thing. If you can follow basic instructions quickpwn will walk break it down barney style.

Awesome. I'm checking it out. Thanks!

Typing this on the new S - I love it already!

What are some reasons to jailbreak?

HHI944 06-19-2009 05:38 PM

I didn't spend $400 today, have video recording, custome backgrounds and TONS of other slick features including tethering.

But, seriously, how are you liking the S? I've heard there's an app to kill the underclock on the 3g and it's basically the same speed as the S.

I am running Tmobile on my phone which is much cheaper than ATT I have a grandfathered unlimited textand data including MMS for $19 a month (not 3g but edge).

Backgrounder, it allows you to run apps in the background, so you can listen to your music and still run GPS. (Free from Cydia)

Smule makes a music app that turns your phone into a flute or a trombone 99c

Melodis voice dialer works great

Isamurai is a great two player sword game.

Dynolicious is cool but you have to have a solid mount platform to get a good reading. ($12.00)

Yellow pages is incredible, it shows you places, and how to get there driving, walking, or taking public trans. (Free)

XGPS is free turn by turn. Decent app (Free)

Also Jailbreaking allows you to use the Video3G which takes great video and sound and allows you to email or upload to youtube right from the app. (Free trial from Cydia)

My favorite game is Tiger Woods Golf it has to be one of the greatest games ever for a phone (on sale now for 6.99 usually 9.99) (App Store)

What are the disadvantages of jailbreaking, if any? Do you have to repeat it after every apple software update? Does it change the sync process? Are phones getting bricked?

Now that's funny right there! I don't care who you are!

The S has been fantastic so far - had it less than 24 hours.

I have only played with friends iphones so I can't really compare the S to last years phone.

I switched from the Sprint Instinct and while the Instinct has some great features that come with the phone, the iphone apps have allowed me to install the features that I was used to. The speed has been very impressive.

This is what ATT says about data access via the iphone 3G, how do they know if you are tethering or just using the iphone to access data?

Tethering is not available in the US according to Apple but it is in other countries on the 3G. Changing the config in the iphone 3G seems to make tethering available.

Why would they care since data is unlimited anyway?

jyl 06-20-2009 02:34 PM

Avg iPhone uses 400MB/mo vs avg 40MB other smartphones. As iPhone users grow, expensive to keep network capacity up with usage. ATT spends $17-18BN/yr on capex, though only part of this is wireless. Not a small amount compared to $13BN/yr wireless data revenue. So their concern is that avg iPhone usage will leap to the GB/yr range with no corresponding increase in revenue - could bust their bank so to speak. And obviously they are also out to maximize profit like any business. So they want to find a pricing model that maximizes profit and also return on the capital investment. My guess is, charging $50/mo for tethering won't work, people will simply keep their laptop cards or go without or find workarounds. Whether the optimal price is $10 or $30, who knows. Maybe they start high and work down if they feel they need to. Free is very likely not optimal for ATT.

Just set up bluetooth tethering on my S - works great - no jailbreak needed.

HHI944 06-23-2009 06:34 AM

I didn't have to jailbreak to get tethering either. It was just a matter of changing some settings, then later I decided to jailbreak. Jailbreaking lets you do fun things to customize the phone much more than Apple allows.

Why did it take 2 years to get Stereo Bluetooth on the iPhone?

HHI944 06-23-2009 11:30 AM

Only god and Steve Jobs know.
