Who listens to electronic music?

Hi,

I've found myself listening to the same 'ol electronic I've been listening to for years (still think Crystal Method's "Vegas" is among the best).

A more recent purchase was Tiesto's "In Search of Sunrise" but it seems my world has gotten rather small when it comes to this genre.

I like higher energy trance. I listen to Paul Van Dyke when I run (Politics of Dancing) but I'm getting bored with it. I have tons of stuff dating back 12 years (anyone remember HardKiss "Delusions of Gandeur"?) since I used to dabble in the DJ scene in college.

I'm getting a new stereo system put in my DD Cherokee so I know I'll be wanting to work it out with some new tunes.

Has anyone made any recent discoveries or have some good recommendations?

Thanks

You mean like a Strat played through a stack of Marshall amps?. Damn I must be getting old as I didn't recognise a single name you mentioned. I'm not sure what "electronic music" even is

That Crystal Method is often in rotation at my house, and it's a classic as far as "electronica" goes. I also enjoy Orbital, Future Sound of London, Aphex Twin, Prodigy (maybe more industrial sounding), and many others.

However, I'm really more of a fan of the "Bristol sound". Sort of down tempo trip hop. Bands like Massive Attack, Morcheeba, Portishhead, etc. Also have much love for Tosca, K&D, and Thievery Corporation.

My kids love it when I play music from The Chemical Brothers and Fat Boy Slim.

From what I understand its huge is Japan and Europe. I might be wrong but I get this impression.

Vegas is still a favorite of mine.

A sample of the Chemical Brothers for KC

I can recommend you check out the danish musician called Trentemoller.. his actual name is Anders Trentemřller. I would probably start by going to itunes and buying all his singles as they are cheap and excellent...then buy his full CD which is slightly different than the singles..slower, more mellow and more instruments are incorporated. He is without a doubt my favorite electronic musician of all time and i have been listening to it since the late 80s.

if you were to buy just 1 song to sample..i would say get the song " Always Something Better feat. Richard Davis (Trentemřller Remix) " off itunes...but be warned...he has a fairly diverse range of sounds/moods etc.... you really need all of his stuff

also, though not 100% "electronic" i find i never tire of thievery corporation. pretty much every album is great

Also, while not entirely "electronica", another act that's caught my interest is M83. Some catchy hooks...

And while not entirely obvious to this genre, Radiohead's, "Kid A", is heavily steeped in electronic sounds! A very spooky listen, pour a couple of fingers, dim the lights, and chill! Their latest, "In Rainbows" follows a similar suite.

i like the new radiohead. for an even more electronic sound, check out Thom Yorke's solo CD "The Eraser". I like it better than the radiohead stuff.

Sorry to keep adding posts, but another classic that was out of print for a while and has been re-released is U.F.Orb. Very mellow and dark.

Which one? I've got In Search of Sunrise 5 and 6. Both are fantastic music - I'd say 6 is a little better.

Paul Van Dyke's "Reflections" double album is great. His song "Nothing But You" is one of my favorite songs in this genre. His "Seven Ways" Album is worth checking out too.

Have you considered satellite radio? Both XM and Sirius have a number of trance/groove/chill stations. On XM, there's 80-The Move (House & progressive dance), 81-bpm (America's dance hits), 82-The System (Trance, Breaks, Electronica), and 84-Chill (Smooth down-tempo electronica). I listen alot to 84-Chill and 82-The System.

Have you considered looking at some of the older stuff? Such as...
Art of Noise - These guys were pioneers in House/Electronica.
Tangerine Dream - again, pioneers in the electronica genre
Enigma (Albums: MCMXC A.D, Voyageur, and their newest: A Posteriori are pretty good)

Some newer stuff:
Dario G - Great sound. Their Sunmachine album is fantastic. (Check out the song: "Be My Friend."
Darude - Sandstorm - a bit more energy - definately electronica/house, not trance/groove/chill. ("Touch Me Feel Me" is a good example of thier sound.)
Dirty Vegas - Their song: "Days Go By" was used in a Mitsu ad a few years ago, and "Simple Things, Pt 2" has a mello cover of Pink Flyod's "Brick in the Wall."
Apoptygma Berzerk - very interesting group from the Netherlands. (Check out "Kathy's Song")

I too need to grow my electronica collection.... will be watching this thread more...

I'm very, very pleased that not a single person on this thread has mentioned either Yanni or Phil Glass.

Keep it up.

Exactly. Several posts on, I still don't recognize a single name. "Electronic" in my day would have been King Crimson with their melotron, ELP with Emerson's Moog and Palmer's synthesized percussion, and stuff like that. Actually, the genre was "progressive", but some of the "electronic" sounds used were pretty cutting edge in the day.
