What's your point? Who's third on all of those lists...THAT'S a far more telling statistic.

My point is self explanatory to most, but I guess not all. #1 in mineral revenue from any source to the federal government. Not Alaska, not Texas, not Oklahoma, not California, it's La that place everybody said was on the govt dole for getting a few of their dollars back for Katrina rebuilding.

Mule, I'm a happy camper right now...You see, our land is right dead-center on top of the Haynesville Shale. We've got landmen circling like sharks!
![]() Wonderful signing bonuses (mostly going from 15-20K/acre) plus 25% royalty. Drill here, drill now! ![]() (They are saying that the HS is the wold's 4th largest natural gas reserve...you should see all the action going on up here)! (Insert Jed Clampett voice: Weeeeeelllll Doggies!)

Mule, with the horizontal drilling, they are going in under many subdivisions around here. Even folks with small lots are getting a "chunk 'o the pie". Chesapaeke & PetroHawk are the major players, and they are really doing the sites right, doing the "beautification" and "safety steps" they learned in the Bradford Shale over around Ft. Worth.

Like I said, whichever state was THIRD in each category would be more informative.

Go look up that & anything else you fell like. The point, however difficult it may be for you to understand is that LA could secede from the nation & live like Abu Dhabi. All the folks who got constipated over Katrina repairs need to take a look at this.

Source?
If you just count the oil that is produced in Louisiana and not what it produced in the gulf (which just happens to be sort of near Louisiana and is shipped to LA), California produces much more oil. As soon as we hang all the bleeding heart tree-huggers who won't let us drill off our coast, california will far surpass Louisiana in oil production even counting what they pull out of the gulf. 12 largest oil fields in the US Field, State Cumulative Production + Est. Reserves http://www.gravmag.com/oil.html 1. Prudhoe Bay, Alaska 13+ billion barrels 2. East Texas 5.1-6.0 billion barrels 3. Wilmington, California 2.8 billion barrels [or up to 3.0] 4. Midway-Sunset, California 2.8 billion barrels [or up to 3.5] 5. Kuparuk River, Alaska 2.6 billion barrels 6. Thunder Horse, Gulf of Mexico 1.5-2.0 billion barrels 7. Kern River, California 1.95 billion barrels [or up to 2.5] 8. Yates, West Texas 1.95 billion barrels 9. Belridge South, California 1.9 billion barrels 10. Wasson, West Texas 1.8 billion barrels 11. Elk Hills, California 1.5 billion barrels [or 1.3] 12. Panhandle, Texas 1.4 billion barrels |

Actually, I had no idea the LA was the highest producer of energy. I just assumed it was Alaska - my bad.

Please, tell me how the folks of LA could secede and make ANY of that money? Most of that revenue going to the feds is from lease sales and royalty taxing...much of it offshore. Now, if the state secedes, do you wanna bet what place can no longer be drilled? 2 guesses, go ahead... Yup, that's right. Lose the leased land, lose the oil, lose the income. They would *basically* be bringing the same that they're bring in now...what's drilled from PRIVATE and STATE owned land. That's what they get the revenue for IN LA now. I won't even go into the fact that the total mineral revenue for the state of LA has DROPPED almost systematically every year since FY1979, and is now about 1/3 of what it was in those glory days of 1982. Yeah, that's a good way to fund the next "Abu Dhabi"

You forgot some that I thought were interesting.
# second in unemployment rate. # second in number of people below the poverty level. # fiftieth in per capita income. But somehow: # third in energy consumption per capita.

Second in crude oil proved reserves. Second in total energy from all sources. Second in natural gas proved reserves. But the key stat in the whole list is First in mineral revenue from any source to the federal government.

Louisiana's gross state product in 2001 was 24th largest among the states at $148.7 billion (with a B) http://www.city-data.com/states/Louisiana-Economy.html
According to the Bureau of Economic Analysis, California's gross state product is $1.727 trillion (with a T) According to the California Department of Finance, if California was an independent country it would have had the seventh largest economy in the world. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Economy_of_California |

I'd also be interesting in seeing, for each of LA and CA, the total value, for, oh, lets say 2004:
(Mineral revenue sent to the feds) + (Federal income tax, personal and business, from residents of that state) I bet THAT number will be even better than what sammyg2 just showed.
