In Hawaii on business need some leisure suggestions
I'm in Honolulu for the business week with time between biz activities and a rental car (jeep to be specific, figured it would be fun for the week). I'm staying at the Hilton Hawaiian village, no wife or kids with me. I can go the beach anytime not looking to spend the day on the sand.
Other then Pearl Harbor and Diamond Head (which I went to already today), can I get some suggestions for places to see, activities, etc. Also anyone care to suggest some good restaurants, for entertaining clients, don't need to be super high end, fun places with good solid food for younger client types. Thanks.

Since you have a rental car, why not take a drive around the island and up to the north shore - the giant waves are really giant. Also, round top mountain is a great drive up a circular mountain full of beautiful homes and a spectular view from the top.
I drove a complete circle aroung the island in about 1/2 day with several stops along the way. |

Yep, hitting the North Shore tomorrow, doing an island loop with my client. Should be fun.
Thanks for the restaurants.

I second the drive around the Island. I did it, it is scenic, loved the roads that go through the jungle, and there are some nice waterfalls too. You can take your time, make stops, take little walks here and there, and it will still be done in a few hours. Enjoy!

The Dole plantation is interesting to kill a few hours and taste some great pineapple.

Chinatown, Legends Seafood(good spot) on Beretainia St. at the river. park in the public ramp across the street. Romy's prawns up on the north shore(far east end)very informal, eat at picnic tables. The Pililaau Army Recreation Center on Pokai Bay(on Army St in Waianai, off Pokai Bay Rd off Farrington). Great food, cheap drinks, tough parking. There is a gatehouse, but the public is invited to eat dinner there. No problem if you are not a vet. Gorgeous little bay and harbor on leeward coast about 40 min from Waikiki.

Oh, one more don't miss, much more moving than Pearl Harbor in my opinion: the National Cemetery of the Pacific, which is like Arlington is many ways. 2177 Puowaina Drive. It is in the Punchbowl Crater in Honolulu. Take Ward Ave off Ala Moana, right on Prospect. It is easiest to find off the Pali Highway, and follow the signs. It has a beautiful panoramic view of all of Honolulu. Also, as you exit, if you turn right you go up to Roundtop, via Tanatalus Drive, more gorgeous views and some super expensive houses, along with some jungle. It is a loop and you drop back down into the city. Hit Beretaina St or King St., turn right and go to Legends Seafood.

So my activities of the past few days.
1) Rented a Jeep Wrangler rode on out of Waikiki and headed east then hugged the coast and went North to Sunset beach, Waimea Bay. Water was flat but still beautiful. Was fun watching the body surfers get slammed onto the sand at Sandy Beach (most dangerous beach in America) 2) Had lunch on the North end of the Island and did some shopping at the surf shops. Great lunch Haleiwa Joes. 3) We had an afternoon meeting so we drove South through the middle of the island past the pineapple plantations, saw the Dole visitors center but it was very crowded and we were in a hurry 4) This morning got on a 6AM fishing charter which honestly blew. Caught nothing and suffered for the first time ever with nasty seasickness. 6 foot swells which we took on the sides of the boat most of the day instead of cutting through them off the bow. Never barfed (can't say that for my friend's kid) but really felt crappy. After 4 hours (10:20AM) of catching nothing I suggested that we pull in the gear and head home to which the captain said "get you back by 12:20 bra, boat can't go any faster bra she'll break up" ![]() I proceeded to lay down and sleep on the cabin floor for 2 hours. Not a pretty sight. I tried every trick I could to get my ear back but to no avail. My client who is former coast guard was cool and laughingly said after reaching land that I was doing the seasickness dance pretty much the whole trip. Accoding to him he knew many "coasties" that can't look at a boat without barfing. Never had that on a boat before, the waves were tough. Spent the afternoon today in a meeting, not fun after that experience. Am heading out now for dinner at Dukes and some drinks. 5) Tomorrow may hit the beach for a bit, then off the airport... Overall a successful business trip and got some fun in, can't complain, this is a beautiful island. Adam
