Gmail spam filter shifts to overdrive?
Starting about monday, the 150 or so spam messages I get each day has been paired down to about 30. This is gmail.
I didn't change any settings. Is this just me or is everyone experiencing the same? and what caused it? Not that I'm complaining....

I have always used gmail to filter my accounts. For years I receive virtually no spam. 2-3 a day and hitting the Report Spam button usually eliminates them within a day. When I check the accounts that gmail is filtering there is a ton of spam there.

Mine went the other way: I used to get maybe one spam per month, now I'm getting 5-10 per day.

+1 - All of a sudden, every Nigerian scammer has been sending me offers. Someone must have sold them my e-mail address.

I'm talking about the gmail spam folder. Gmail has always done a good job of sending the junk to the spam folder, it's just that now the volume landing in the spam folder is WAY down.

Trouble with spam filters for a business is you don't know if a customer might be filtered out depending on how they mail you. With the word "windowman" in my addy, I suspect getting trashed now and then before the intended recipient sees it. |

Milt you are exactly right.
I always view my spam folder to make sure legite messages are getting sent there. Gmail spam filter does a great job. Good messages get sent to spam very rarely. But because I rarely find anything in the 150 or so daily spams, I tend to scan it very quickly. Now with about 30 messages, it's a lot easier. My concern is that maybe gmail is simply trashing the other 120 or so without telling me. And maybe filtering legit messages.

They probably use black lists so they are blocking hundreds of spams.

Just this week I had a customer call and wonder why I haven't responded to his emails. Of course I said I never received any, looked in gmail spam folder and there they were. I have been getting emails from the same client via gmail for months, then all of a sudden they were labeled spam.
Something had to change.

Gmail's spam filter is awesome.
For an example of a horrible one, use hotmail for a while. It'll make you appreciate whatever Google is doing.
