WASHINGTON — Republican presidential candidate John McCain’s signal that he may be open to a higher payroll tax for Social Security, despite previous vows not to raise taxes of any kind, is drawing sharp rebukes from conservatives.
McCain’s shift has come in stages, catching some Republicans by surprise. Speaking with reporters on his campaign bus on July 9, he cited a need to shore up Social Security. “I cannot tell you what I would do, except to put everything on the table,” he said.

“There is nothing that’s off the table. I have my positions, and I’ll articulate them. But nothing’s off the table,” McCain said. “I don’t want tax increases. But that doesn’t mean that anything is off the table.”

Indeed, McCain frequently has promised not to raise taxes.

At a July 7 town-hall meeting in Denver, he said voters faced a stark choice between him and Democrat Barack Obama.
“Sen. Obama will raise your taxes,” McCain said. “I won’t.”

In a March 16 interview with Fox News’ Sean Hannity, McCain said he would cut taxes where possible, and not raise them.
“Do you mean none?” Hannity asked.
“None,” McCain replied."

Troubling, to say the least. I will still vote for McCain, hell i'd literally vote for Pazuzu over Obama, but it will definitely cost him votes.

He needs to re-waffle back to no new taxes. :-/

+1. Everyone knew Obama would raise taxes, in our current economy it's a risky policy. McCain should have adopted a "Read my lips no new taxes" strategy. Big mistake. Especially for social security. Personally, at 28 I'm EXPECTING social security to be gone when I'm ready to retire, SS deductions are just another tax. Until they allow the individuals to control their own funds, I will never support further SS funding.

I share the sentiment of those who believe there will be no SS money left by the time I reach retirement and as such, I'd much rather put the $$$ into my own investment funds or elsewhere.

I fully support(ed) Ron Paul. I honestly felt he was the best, most down-to-earth and most true-to-the-Constitution candidate out there. But (predictably) the powers-that-be never allowed him to be taken seriously and honestly so much of America is too stupid to think for themselves beyond the 2-party-system bullhooie that's spoon-fed to them I doubt it will ever happen. Americans are unbelievably stupid when it comes to seizing control of their own destinies - it shows in virtually everything they do, and politics is no exception. They get sold a crock of caca about how they only have two HIGHLY dumbed-down bullet points to choose from and most of the dimwits simply punch "A" or "B" instead of asking "are there any other choices?"

In the last 4 weeks, I've heard more and more and MORE from people all over, stating that they're considering not voting, because they cannot support either person.

I then, obviously, remind them to vote Libertarian. This election is SCREAMING for a third party candidate! They say no.

They'd rather not vote than vote for change. THAT is why I don't carry a gun...I'd have personally been responsible for dropping the Texas voting rolls by several thousand people by now

Wanna talk about flip-flopping?
A couple of months ago our democrat-controlled congress was talknig about a gas tax holiday, suspending the federal gas tax temporarily.
What are they saying today?
People aren't driving as much so there isn't as much gas tax revenue to go around! we need to raise the federal excise tax on gasoline by a minimum of 10 cents!
You watch, these "brilliant people" are gonna try to do it.

On a $4 gallon of gas in the L.A. area, we pay almost 69 cents in taxes.
The refinery that makes the gas is lucky to get 20 cents.
And they want to raise gas taxes another ten cents. I have a different opinion.

That's mostly California's fault, not the federal govt. The feds are taking 18 cents of your money per gallon. Even if the fed gas tax was suspended, you'd be paying $3.82 per gallon. I'm not defending it - just putting it in perspective - your own state is robbing you waaay more than the federal govt in this case.
