Mitsubishi help for my neighbor...
A good buddy who lives next door had some bad luck today. He rode the bus back to the Park-N-Ride where he leaves his '01 Montero and found out that someone had stopped by earlier in the day and kindly used some type of cutter (very clean cut) to remove part of his exhaust system.
It's a V-6. There still appear to be 2 Catalytic converters coming from the manifolds. There are still 2 mufflers, a small one roughly under the floor aft of the drivers seat and another larger one way in the back. The part that got cut off is right below the driver's floorboard. I'm guessing that it was a resonator (or some type of pre-muffler). I don't think there would be 3 Cat Converters, but I really don't know... Any ideas what that piece is. Any damage to the motor in driving it to the dealer to fix it. I told him we could just go pick up a section of muffler pipe and temp patch it to get it to a shop... Thanks !

As much as I hate to say this, at least they did a clean job. If there's one thing I hate it's criminals who have no clue how to properly remove a head unit, instr. cluster, etc, from a car. That being said, I have no idea what piece he's missing and, were I in his position, would at least replace it with a short section of pipe lest the CPD write you a ticket for a noise violation, the EPA cite you for pollution and PETA cite you for killing . . . bunnies or something.

WOW, they were most likely stealing the catalytic converter, or attempting too at least. They are typically laced with precious metals... platinum, iridium, etc. The value of "used" catalyst cores has skyrocketed lately. There are lots of people out trying to buy "used" catalyst to recycle for cash. It's no wonder some criminal with a cordless sawzall saw the park and ride and had an idea. I hope they catch him and use the sawzall on his, well, I'll let Jesse Jackson finish this one...

1st of all, sort of dick-ish comment Kevin ! I don't really frequent any other automotive forums than a few of these for Porsche. Upon occasion over the years here I've participated in lots of threads on topics related to cars in general. I'm trying to help out my neighbor as quick as I can since I just learned about it.
- I'm sure you can find a group of like-minded people on another board. Porsches have Cat Conv(s) too... ------------- '68Cayman: That's what I said to the guy too... Literally looks like a 'pro' from a muffler shop came by and sliced it with a hot butter knife. It should be VERY easy to fix. The cuts are at perfect 90 degree angles and no other metal is bent and the bottom side of the floor isn't even scratched. The Montero sits perfectly high enough to lay on your back underneath it and do this. I guess that's now another down side to owning a SUV. ------------ rsmike: haha - Jesse Jackson... I hadn't heard about the value going up so much but I do know they are expensive to replace. Do you have any idea how many Cat Conv(s) they are putting on cars/SUV(s) these days. There were 2 there, one for each set of 3 cylinders, then a 'Y' pipe that fed to the piece that got cut. Would there have been a secondary-stage Cat Conv ?

It is possible that it was a converter. One quick way to check is to see where the 02 sensors are.... It would have a total of 3 or 4 sensors two for each cylinder bank in front of the Cat and either 1 or 2 behind the cat. depending on the design. Some cars have pre cats and some don't If the crook knows what he was doing if would just want the main cat (worth more).
Hope this helps.

The thieves might have gotten spooked and fled before they got everything that they really wanted. There are several really nice tools that could be used in the limited amount of room under the vehicle.
Hopefully they won't come back for seconds.

Porsche
There could very well be 3 converters. The "PORSCHE" Boxster S came with four! Hopefully they didn't get one with oxygen sensors in it...
One of my "PORSCHE" buddie's father is in in the Cat Conv business. He made an absolute fortune in the eighties, collecting and recycling unwanted converters. dude has a stock car avatar... I wonder if it's Porsche powered. Is that the new Daytona Prototype of Tommorow??? Relax Kev, it's not so bad ![]() Last edited by rsrmike; 08-01-2008 at 06:14 AM.. |

I would think your friend could likely get by with two replacement cats, one for each manifold. Don't let him buy a dealer unit either, they are spendy. A quality aftermarket cat (Magnaflow, etc) should work find for his Montero. Sucks for him, this is getting common, especially for trucks and SUVs.

I forgot about that handy tool... geez those are nearly silent compared to sawzalls... What's next, the Catatlytic Chasity Belt? Nasa needs to get to work on this technology... right away! (sorry, obscure UCB reference) I need a job... |

I'm agreeing to the above and maybe they didn't get to finish the job. I have been reading alot about people stealing the cats off cars lately among other scrap metal items.

In his defense, I did initially post it in the '911 Tech Forum'. I was there, posting to a different thread, and just posted it. I was thinking more about the problem than which forum I was in. -Should have posted it here. Regardless, I don't allocate much of the time in my day to deal with weenies.
Too much life to live !

Gotta do that yourself...the off-road community is getting hit hard. Toyota cats are bolted in, and you can easily get under a lifted truck. It's almost like handing them the cat. Lots of people are now welding think plate metal across the frame rails to hide the cat.

The local Red Cross was hit here recently, all of the cats on their trucks were stolen. Really, how much lower can you go than stealing from a charity? Mugging a priest?
