Any cyclists ride vintage?

I just found my new ride. I was given a 61cm Bertin road touring/racing bike from the 70's. it's going to have to come apart, and everything will be re-detailed. I'm more of a mountain biker (less likely to get hit by a car, even though trees are pretty immovable), but I'm pretty excited about this. It's pretty old skool. TA cranks, Simplex deraileur, Mafac "racer" brakes (which look like Mafacs, but with "racer" stamped on them as well) Rigida wheels, Milremo bars and pedals... The lug work is really cool. the bike is brazed, and it looks like the brazing is unpainted in the little v shaped area in the lugs...I don't know how they did that...perhaps it's just gold paint.

I'm 6'3" and yes, the frame fits me really well.

Here's some pics:

Cool!

I ride a steel '80s (I think it's an '86) Pinarello almost daily. Not quite as old as yours, but certainly no new plastic thing either.

Steel is real. There's a few other "old bike" guys on here.

cool.

if anyone's looking I've got a 50cm peugeot frame (early 80's), and have access to a 58cm (IIRC) Nishiki frame...I know there's some componentry on them, but can't remember what off the top of my head.

Geeze...I've got an old Raleigh "supercourse"...reynolds (forget the numbers... 531?) tubing hanging in the garage...pretty tall frame, since I was 6'3" during the early 70's. It's a mere 10 speed...fingertip shifters.
How did you measure that 61 cm??? I got a "deal" on the bike because shorter people weren't interested, and it was near the top of the line at the time.

I'll never ride again. Anybody here interested? Time for me to continue the quest of getting rid of "stuff" I don't use.

Here's a couple more closeups.

Atax neck, and Milremo bars...

I'm finalizing my rebuild of my 1989 Trek 400. I need to get the Polar systems installed so I can use it for commuting. I'll let you know how I like the steel vs. Al & Carbon in a few weeks.

I'd still have my Schwinn 'Super LeTour 12.2' if it hadn't been lifted from my garage.

Nice bike.

Simplex - there's a blast from the past.

While I appreciate older bikes (in grad school I commuted on a Mondia), if I'm going to dice it on the road with cars I want very good brakes and responsive handling. In general you don't get that from a vintage bike. I don't do STI (barcons, baby), but index shifting and stout brakes are important to me. ymmv.

Love the old steel bikes. I have a very nice Eddy Merckx that I picked up at the factory in 1984.
Raced that poor bike all over Europe, and now is ridden on fun rides.
Also have a Gitane from the 70's was really light for its day great rides.

Would love to have an old Peugeot PX-10. Raced one as a kid and sold it once I got my drivers license. Wish I had kept riding the bike longer, would be in better shape!

I raced a Stiletto in the early 90's and also had a Davidson tandem. They rock.

No issues with a late 80's Davidson - that isn't "vintage" to me. In fact, that is a fairly modern bike wrt geometry and components that will fit. The problem with going into the 70's and earlier is hub spacing, cable routing, etc. Fine to putter around on but I wouldn't stake my life on 40 year old Mafac brakes.

But if you really want to ride it, at least put on fresh cables and brake pads.

I do vintage. '85 Colnago Super with Campy Super Record, and an '86 Peugeot PY10fc; first carbon fiber race bike produced. The Colnago is a workhorse, but that 53/42 gearing in the hills is a killer. The Peugeot - what can be said? It's a 22-year-old bike with Campy Record, but still weighs about 17 pounds. Light even by today's standards.

My main rider is a Cinelli Spirit with newer Shimano Ultegra. Yeah, friction shift is good to relive old days, but STI can't be beat. I'd like to go German on my next bike. Storck makes a sweet carbon ride, but Jeez, $7,700 for just the frame? C'mon...

Old steel still makes for the best ride.

If you're going to go vintage, how about a Brooks saddle instead of the Sella Italia Turbo. Just for looks. I heard that they are comfy too. I spend many years on the turbo.

I have a Casati from the early 80s (yeah, Montrose CC ) that I scraped up pennies for in high school. I won 2 races in that thing. Its still cpmplete with Campy super record hanging up in the garage. All I need or looking for is a set of Mavic GL 330 rims and laced up to a set of super record hubs. I will be complete and very happy.

How did you get thing down to 17 lbs with Stuper Record in an SL frame. The Mexico was what I lusted after. The red ones just the Russins used to ride in the Peace Race and the Coors Classic.

I have a bike from the late 70's out in the garage. Bought it in high school....paid $400 back then. If memeory serves, it's called a Chimo Concourse. Huret shifter, Campagnolo Velox running gear, etc. Been collecting dust almost since new. Thought about putting it on Craigslist and getting a mountain bike. Any idea what such a thing is worth?

cool... I've got a TREK 950 mountain bike from that period. guy down at the bike shop offered me money on the spot for it... his quote was "WOW!! Last of the Cro-Moly TREKs"...in much the same way the mechainc in MAD MAX was all over the V8 interceptor.
