Global warming my aching "Edited - language removed, Z-man"!
A patch of land in Ventura County's section of Los Padres National Forest where the ground recently heated up to 812 degrees continues to puzzle firefighters and geologists after weeks of monitoring. http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-hotground5-2008aug05,0,4689903.story

VOLCANO!!! AAHHHH!!! WE'RE ALL GONNA' DIE!!!
(where's the media to hype the crap out of this and try and scare everyone into thinking the end of the world is nigh?) This is the first I heard of it, so that means there must be something more newsworthy going on. Like Britney Spears or Paris Hilton.

Learn to swim!
Apparently mother nature will burn the hydrocarbons we don't. Are we really saving anything by artificially restricting our fossil fuel use?

This is a map of a place they call jellystone. It'as mostly in Wyoming. they have all kinds of hot places on the ground there. They have steam coming out of them and in some places, big streams of hot water shoots out of the ground waaaay up into the air! It's quite a sight.

We have many natural hotsprings in California. Never heard anyone ever panic and call it "Hell" before. People from out of California freak out and run for the hills, and here we call it a mudbath or a tourist attraction.
Check this out in Calistoga, California: http://www.oldfaithfulgeyser.com/ |

rusnak, you can go alot closer than northern ca. to get a natural hot mudbath, try mono hot springs above huntington lake.
It's geologically in the same region as mammoth mountain (which is a dormant volcano, not extinct, just sleeping)

Hi Looney, nice to meet you.
I know about Mono, we used to go there from my parent's cabin, which was at Huntington Lake. I hate that road though...with a passion. Too many single lane sections. I must have blocked that out mentally. Actually I sort of like the "Old Faithful" geyser at Calistoga. I am thinking about taking a road trip up there when the weather cools off a bit. |

Dzls, I used to put up props in the peach orchards - way worse than picking them. I also used to shovel end rows in the vinyards. I started at one end, started the pump, and a few hours later reached the other end of the field, a mile away. I worked "from can't see to can't see" for my entire teenage years, then left for Irvine. I was so motivated to go to college, I never partied, never got drunk, and to this day I look back and see that it built character in me. Nowdays I just think about how great life is, and how happy I am to be living it.
But yeah, the heat.....oh my gosh today it did feel like "hell" even in my air conditioned office. |

That's right in my backyard. We have Sespe Hot springs, Tar Creek, Texaco oil leases from way back. Lots of steam, oil and natural gas up in them thar hills.

I've hiked in the area and besides being an early and current oil production spot, oil just oozes out of the ground in many places. Only other place I've seen that is Wyoming.
I expect the news article is correct that O2 is getting in and mixing with some oil. Could also be a hot springs shifting around - there is a place near Bridgeport like that - several bathers have been killed when the hot water shifted suddenly. EtOH & Drugs probably helped.... |

Really? I thought it was a big let down. "No Country for Old Men" I thought was better, but not up to the hype.
