Lance Armstrong vs. David Wiens - Leadville 100

Pretty cool site recapping yesterday's race. I won't spoil it, but both guys did amazingly well.

Not too shabby for a guy who hasn't trained in 3+ years, eh?

The guy is simply a genetic anomaly. Mutant. X-man style. The guy is simply amazing...

I'm definitely going to start mixing in mtn. riding into my training schedule (seeing as I've been logging a lot of miles on my Cannondale lately while I'm waiting for my new road steed to show up). Falling in love with it all over again.

Maybe in a year or two when I'm actually ready to start racing...

i don't believe for one second he didn't train, not even OneNut would go for such a race without training somewhat
He's an ex pro cyclist, he knows to well he can do damage if he's not prepared

maybe he didn't train like he used to for the Tour, but he must have trained to some extent

Plus, and this is no little thing:

the race is almost all above 11,000 feet. Unless you've done it, you cannot fathom how much harder that makes it. Just amazing what it does.

A good percentage of the earth's atmosphere is below you.

A lot fewer oxygen molecules floating around.

Wiens is frikkin awesome, but if LA trains seriously for that event - even at his age - Wiens is dead meat next year.

I never admit I'm in decent shape and have been training. Especially when I
am in decent shape and have been training.

The biggest lie a cyclists makes is how much training they've put in... You line up for a big race and everyone's talking about not riding for six months, that surgery they just had, having the lung recently removed etc., and then BAM! They take off like a top fuel dragster! And you're sitting there like WTF???? Thought you guys were tired/sick/untrained? and then you start chasing...

LA is one of my favorite athletes, but Wiens is pretty far up there. The guy climbs like a goat. I suspect LA will knuckle down and come back for another shot at it

That'll be another one to see!

Wiens is 44, too. I rides like a monster. Love that.

Wouldn't it be cool if Armstrong came back? An 8th Le Tour win?

LOL - Isn't that the truth! I remember getting started in MTB riding and my racing buddy invited me to a low key (off day) bike ride. After about 1/2 mile of casual spinning it was big rings and POOF - they were gone. Bicycle racing is like a poker game. Once you have enough rides/miles with a group of guys everyone figures out each other's little bluffs or when the other guys is really suffering and then it's game on.
