Duramax love

I love Duramaxes. Don't have much of a use for them. But I love them.

Then again, I don't have that much use for a Renault R5 Turbo...

But I wouldn't kick the Renault out of my driveway, either.

Diesel trucks are the greatest, it's just a tragedy what's happened to the price of diesel. It affects the cost of everything in a store, and really ****s blue-collar guys who need to drive PU trucks. Those trucks drive like a dream.

Amen. It really amazes how much of a difference there is between similar trucks with gas vs diesel engines. A guy I know had an older dodge ram with a 360, then sold it and bought an identical truck (color and everything) with a 5.9 cummins. The thing is a brute, bags of torque right from idle. It tows effortlessly, whereas with the v8 you felt like you were always wringing its neck.

Even my Suzuki Samurai, which isn't a truck so much as a large ATV, is a completely different animal with the turbodiesel swap. In 4wd Low, I can move a 4000 lb trailer around the yard with ease. That's only a VW 1.6TD; it's nutty.

All hail torque! Diesels and trucks are a match made in heaven. I might consider a truck if they ever come out with small displacement diesels in 1/2 ton PUs. Or, even better, if Toyota would import their diesel Tacoma (HiLux).

Why wait for the Toy diesel to come to the states (it never will...).

Take your favorite Hilux and drop a 4BT in there!!

Mike, I know from browsing Toyota truck sites it's a popular swap. It would be a fun project, that's for sure.

Having been a Toy 4x4 wheeler for over a decade, I know how hard it is to hear about the diesel, double cab, solid axle Hiluxes that some countries got. alas, it'll never fly here in the states. So, ya gotta roll yer own!

I know that's Toy's stance, but I think they're wrong. A diesel Tacoma that gets 25-30 MPG with more towing capacity would be a big seller. Modern direct injection turbo-diesels are really easy to live with, unlike the loud cranky diesels of old.

http://blogs.edmunds.com/straightline/2007/06/gm-announces-all-new-45l-duramax-v8-diesel.html

GM will introduce a 4.5L V8 turbodiesel in 2010 for their light trucks and Hummer.

This is a 100% in-house GM design, and not engineered by Isuzu.

• The turbocharged engine is a DOHC unit with 4-valves per cylinder... • It's expected to be rated in excess of 310 hp and 520 pound-feet of torque.

• It will meet the stringent 2010 emissions standards, and it will be compliant in all 50 states, making it one of the cleanest diesel vehicles ever produced.

• This engine should be able to fit in the engine bays of any GM product currently using small-block V8s—which could mean some very interesting further vehicle/model applications.

Sounds promising.

John, I envy you for having that option in the UK.

My understanding is that the 6.2, 6.5l diesels share the same mounting pattern as the SBC. There have already been some pretty wacky swaps done, from caprices to corvettes.

I have an uncle with a Buick Roadmaster wagon with a 6.2l turbodiesel truck engine. He said it was a straightforward swap as far as bolting in the engine was concerned, but a fair bit of fab work for electronics, cooling & exhaust.

Question for you guys? Can I swap in a diesel engine for the 4.6 V8 in my 2003 Mountaineer? I mean, what are the complexities? Any thoughts? I'm tired of 13 mpg coupled with less torque than my 911's 2.7 produces.

Not easy to swap at all. New diesel engines have a lot of electronics and really are designed to work with the transmission they come with. The Mountaineer chassis is probably too weak the rear end definitely is. Bigger springs all the way around at least. Probably only a Cummins would fit, the inline 6.

Above & beyond the complexity, it may not even be legal depending on what state you live in.
