Bob Costas - I can't stand him!
Good God, get rid of him. The pandering, the stupid comments, the Mary (I'm a man) Carillo guest spots when she sits in to engage in deprecating banter about Costas' diminutive height. He's so staid, it's shameful. He talks down to the audience, and talks up to his self-importance. Costas hasn't given a single interesting piece of commentary during the first week of the Olympic games. The next two weeks will surely be hell with him at the helm.
Plus, Costas has a crappy dye job on his hair.

Most of the announcers are really annoying and kind of insulting towards our athletes. When Phelps won his third gold the commenter said that he did not get a good start after Phelps had won. OH WAIT, world record and gold. You could tell that he didn't want him to win.
Later when the mens 4x100 relay was on one of the announcers said, "I have put it down on paper and every time the French win." OH WAIT A MINUTE. World record and GOLD. He just did not want to look stupid in the event of the US losing. He could have said "THIS WILL BE A TOUGH ONE FOR THE US TEAM." Oh no, being opinionated and captious (a new word for me!) is the best way to keep everyone happy.

1984 L.A. Games was the last that ABC hosted. Back then, the commentary was poetry and oratory. With NBC, it's grades school dialogue. Get rid of Costas and let ABC do The Games in 2012.

Whoever the lady was that was commenting on the pairs diving last night... I wanted to choke her. Nitpicked everyone BUT the Chinese. They could do no wrong.
That's been a running trend throughout the games, I've noticed. |

When the Olympics were in Seoul a few years back, we had a satellite system that let us get the "raw" feeds. This is he stuff that they shoot that hasn't been edited. AWESOME! You get crazy coverage - modern pentathalon, cycling etc., that gets cut for regular viewing.
You also get the raw announcer footage. The camera's never shot off. Bob Costs is a jerk. He berated everyone who was near him including athletes, co-stars, people bringing him coffee, the makeup lady etc. Really nasty guy. I've never seen a broadcast with him since and failed to remember his horrendous behavior. I'd vote him most likely to be poisoned by the support staff. angela

When I watch the Olympics (and it's what my wife wants to watch--I could care less), I can't help but think of the comentators in the movie Dodge Ball. Yes, the comments are often that stupid.
And the one Costas bit I watched was when he was interviewing Bella Corrolly (SP?). He spent the whole interview complaining about a broken mic.

Costas is a jackass and Mary Carillo brings no useful insight to the games. She should stick to what she knows best - lesbian tennis.
I don't mind a guy giving his opinion and being wrong, - Rowdy Gaines unfortunate commentary on the men's 4 X 100 relay. The US was behind by a body length after 325 meters against the world record holder. Lezak closed that gap in the last 75 meters with a superhuman effort. But even the guy doing the play-by-play on the relay realized there was something amazing going on while Rowdy was analyzing the race for the silver!! Rowdy missed a great opportunity to add some insight into what was the greatest relay race in history. 5 teams broke the world record in that race!! Bad performance on his part.

I hate a lot of announcers, but I don't hate Costas. He has a self deprecating sense of humor that, if you watch HBO's Football show, is apparent. They could do far worse, trust me.

Could be a lot worse - ever watch Fox Sports? Good lord, they make NBC look phenomenal. Hearing any commentary by Joe Buck makes me want to have someone pound railroad spikes into my ears with a 10-pound sledgehammer just so I don't have to listen.

Well, coming off three weeks of Tour de France coverage, where the commentary was sage about the race's history, the riders' profiles, the beauty of the countryside, the technical aspects of the bicycles, and done partly in French and Italian, I'm spoiled.
The commentary is much better on some of the lesser NBC stations - like CNBC - that are showing sports Americans supposedly don't care about, like whitewater rafting, rowing, etc.
