IT help with internet connection

Symptoms realy slow, IE never finishes loading pages. Happens then suddenly goes away and then everything is fine.

Wednesday night I talked to charter cable and everything was working fine (he pinged the modem?). Figured it was on my end so I disconnected the router, plugged it directly into the computer and everything worked fine. Went out and bought a new router and it worked for a while but now it is back.

If I ping charter this is what I get.

C:\Users\Rick>ping www.charter.net -n 50

Pinging www.charter.net [64.192.190.12] with 32 bytes of data:

One more question If the router says my internet port IP Address is xx.xxx.xxx.xxx which is charter communications is that the address on my side of the RF modem?

C:\Users\Rick>ping xx.xxx.xxx.xxx -n 50

Pinging xx.xxx.xxx.xxx with 32 bytes of data:

Ping statistics for xx.xxx.xxx.xxx :

Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 0ms, Maximum = 0ms, Average = 0ms

Your first post shows 4 time outs, but not where. When you ping an address, the reply has only a certain amount of time to reply or the intial request dies out there, resulting in the time out. If you feel it is an Internet connection issue, try using tracert (Windows) to charter or google or pelican.

Example:
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator>c:\windows\system32\tracert google.com

Tracing route to google.com [64.233.167.99]

You know that there may be a problem with a router out there...

The second post is normal. Your router ha a built in firewall and logger and is reporting the addresses out there are actively 'probing' your connection. Happens all the time and 'ping' is widely used, as it usually gets ignored by sys admins - unless they notice a huge volume coming from one or more sources.

You can see what your eternal I.P. is, by going to www.whatismyip.com. If it matches your third post, then it is your I.P., but your service is probably dynamic, so the number will change from time to time.

Thanks SLODAVE

My internet went away completely (at least to have ie load pelican parts) and now it is perfect again.

That trace route is pretty cool. When it didn't work #2 was all *'s any idea what #2 and #3 are and where they would be located? I wish I had saved a copy of the non working version.

If I type in 10.169.227.1 to who is it says that range belongs to "Internet Assigned Numbers Authority"

If I type in 24.xxx.xxx.xxx to who is it says it belongs to "Charter Communications "

1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms 192.168.1.1 <- This is your broadband routers internal I.P. or LAN address
2 8 ms 5 ms 5 ms 10.169.227.1 <- This is most likely the eternal I.P. or AN address of your Cable modem
3 7 ms 7 ms 8 ms 24.xxx.xxx.xxx <- this is probably the first router on charter.net's network.

My guess it that the issue is at your Cable modem or possibly somewhere where the cable comes into your house.

When you have the issue again, do the tracert and keep track of the *'s. If they consistently show up at hop 2, then you might need to get the cable company out.

Dave

EDIT: What model router did you buy?

Back up.

Does the computer perform poorly on other tasks?

Have you downloaded a different browser and tried that?

Have you run a speed test?

+1 on the "What router did you buy" question. I had similar behavior earlier this year on Charter. I went through several cheap routers. My son finally talked me into getting one of the "gaming routers".. Not readily available locally but Amazon has good prices BTW. No problem since.

BTW - don't make the mistake of enabling the router notification options! I tried that and had my email account promptly disabled by charter. Turns out the router was getting hammered with intrusion attempts and the cheap'o processors couldn't keep up. Charter's response.. "it happens nothing we can do". I'm really wondering if U-verse will be better?

It is working again.

I am beginning to think modem also which means this won't get fixed until charter comes out here. They won't let me exchange it. Besides that it is physically hot.

Pathping combines ping and tracert. I don't think it will really help diagnose the issue. If you continue to try tracert when the Inet goes down and hop 2 shows *, then I'd say it's the modem.

When it wasn't working hop 2 shows 4 *.

I did a search on tracert and tring to figure out what the 3 times refer to. This was from a minute ago.

There's a definite problem near you. Here's a traceroute from my house to what I think may be your eternal I.P.

The x's are where my I.P. would be. You can see what happens at hop 11. I have one this repeatedly and it always times out once or twice. BTW 4 '*' means that that hop (router) is unreachable.

Go to www.whatismyip.com and then PM me the I.P. addy.
