Putin says USA to blame for georgian conflict

This is the first I've seen of this. If true I'm not entirely surprised by the accusation. What are the chances anyone could be serious about this?

I think it's actually a pretty good move for Putin to say this. Dems are always aching for (more) evidence that America is what's wrong with the world. Last night Joe Biden said Obama was gonna fix this whole mess. I'd like to know how we created it and how we'd fix it. A few weeks ago, Tim Kaine had the gall to say Russia had heeded Obama's call for restraint and begun pulling back. Can't make this stuff up. Putin is no dummy at all and this is the perfect week and media environment for America-haters to make their voices heard.

It is actually that far fetched? The US is not necessarily to blame, but who knows what political agendas are up their sleeves. Afterall, Bush was busy making new friends while the conflict unfolded. I'm not even going to bother opening the 9-11 can of worms...

They already said Obama will fix global warming, so what's a little conflict in GA? Should the USA have the utter misfortune to end up with O as president, our enemies will show him to be the biggest punk since Yimma Carter.

Does everyone forget that Putin was the head of the USSR's secret police?

His timing in invading these two territories was PERFECT! He knew there would be nothing but 'words from the west'. The Olympics were on, and Bush was as lame a duck as he has ever been. Oil from Russia would keep Europe quiet, and his recent removal from the presidency was so PERFECTLY orchestrated that he placed his handpicked successor who then immediately made him Prime Minister.

Wish we had a president that had those kind of balls, and the will to back them up.

Spot on. I'd like to see Obama charm Putin into changing his stripes.

It would be better for our President just to be able to see Putin's stripes as he looks into his eyes.

While Bush surely misjudged Putin's character, I don't know how the U.S. could have prevented this invasion. It's not like we had no idea it was coming or were gonna talk China into rescheduling the Olympics because of it. The fact of the matter is that Putin holds all the cards here and the rest of the world has to just take it. No one, especially the weak-willed European appeasers, is willing to lose a single soldier in a fight with Russia.

I haven't seen this story picked up elsewhere yet but I haven't had time to search yet. It's an interesting, if futile deflection.

Mr Putin said in the interview: "The fact is that US citizens were indeed in the area in conflict during the hostilities.

"It should be admitted that they would do so only following direct orders from their leaders."

Mr Putin added: "The American side in effect armed and trained the Georgian army.

"Why... seek a difficult compromise solution in the peacekeeping process? It is easier to arm one of the sides and provoke it into killing another side. And the job is done.

yes, i read some of it. I question how well Russia can instigate ethnic fighting in all the countries listed. There are power hungry people in every new nation to instigate fighting and I'm not sure I could lay the blame upon Russia every time it happens.

Why, the correct answer, of course, is it's always Bush's fault. Of course, Bush could have prevented the whole thing. Now it will be up to the next president to talk some sense into Putin.
