I now have 5 fire extinguishers in my garage. I have a halon extinguisher in my car. I have one on each wall so that I am never in a place where I can't get to one.

Smart. Now that I've started welding I really need to step it up.

We heat the house with wood, so I've been dilligent in that area. But the garage, yeah I need to rethink my approach... especially with 100 gallons of vegetable oil in there.

A local fellah who owns ~5 samurais came to collect it last night. He's going to rebuild it. He may buy the vw adapter kit, which I don't think I'll end up using. I'm leaning towards a Benz 5cyl diesel in a 4runner

my wife says I talk funny too!

Picked up this fellah yesterday.

1990 4runner. 4cyl, 5sp, 345k kms

no power anything, other than power steering. Tires have ~500 kms on them.

It's been sitting for a year, so it was a bit sketchy to drive home 400+ kms with.

Brakes were seized up but they eventually let go. Rotors are warped... the brake pedal is like an armageddon pedal... step on it and you get mayhem, horrible noise and a sense of impending doom. They'd stick if I used them, so I did my damndest not to.

The guy lives in the middle of NOWHERE in Nova Scotia. He's advertised it for 3 months. Plenty of calls, but I was the first to see it. I pretty much stole it.

I have a VW 1.9 turbodiesel ready to go in, I just have to order the adapter plate & flywheel.

First I need to get it past the safety inspection... front pads & rotors, e-brake cables and front shocks. The rear end needs some work too: On the highway, if I let off the gas it twitches right... if I get ON the gas it twitches left. I'm assuming that's just some bushings.

Hmmm a TDI swap in my Saturn???

I loved the video but I am sorry she burned up. hopefully it found a good home. Do you have a website with all your diesel accomplishments? I remember your WVO conversion on your 300TD. I would love to ready in more detail about your upcoming TDI swap.

"The guy lives in the middle of NOWHERE in Nova Scotia. "

Jake!

Holy Crap, Man, I just saw this thread. (I've gone back to work and don't have as much time as I used to to spend on Pelican.)

Sorry to see Sammy's Valhalla-like end.

So just where was the middle of "Nowhere Nova Scotia"? I've got a few ideas ranging from Cannan to Musquodoboit. Sounds like it was an interesting drive home. Have you rebuilt the calipers yet?

Talk to you soon.

Les

Nice 4Runner! It should be a suitable replacement for the Samari. The 22RE will still be running when the cockroaches have taken over.

Will a VW 1.9 diesel be sufficient? I've always dreamed of a 1st gen 4Runner with a diesel conversion.

I'll be setting up a blog to document the swap... I'm already getting tons of info flying by email. Lots to sort through!

Nah it's all good! Even though sammy was a trusted mule, we had outgrown him and I was resisting ever getting rid of him. This made it a lot easier to decide, I guess. Plus it was one hell of a show!

Somewhere near Mt Euniack (sp)? The guys said it was just outside of Truro, but it seemed awful close to Halifax to me. It was on some lake, in the sticks, where roads are left unnamed. He had it advertised for a couple months, but I was the first to go out and see it.

I was going to get caliper kits for it, but I think I scored some good used calipers for $25/each. Looks like the rotors are a PITA to pull off though, I'm hoping the Armageddon Brake Pedal is caused by a rear drum. I'm tearing into it this weekend to see what's what.

Thanks! It sure looks passable at 20 ft! The guy did a fair bit of body work to it in the spring. Not perfect, but all in metal and better than I would have done it. It is just right actually... not horribly ugly, but not so nice that I wouldn't drive it through an old shed just for kicks.

Well, the 22re was ~110hp & 140ft/lb new... the 1.9 idi (indirect injection) turbodiesel was ~ 90hp / 115 ft/lb new. So, no, I actually think it'll be horribly slow.

The engine I have is relatively fresh, with ~100k. I think I'd feel comfortable squeezing up to 100hp & 130 ft/lbs... anything more than that and I'll be burning it up... I've seen enough half melted pistons to know better. I'll increase the fueling a bit, bump up the wastegate PSI and add an intercooler. That should make a difference

Even then, it'll be a dog. But, I have the engine on a stand NOW, I know VW diesels pretty well and have a ready supply of parts. Plus, there is a tried & true adapter plate & flywheel to mate the VW engine to the 'yota tranny. So although the 1.9 is not ideal, I think it makes the most sane starting point.

Ideally, someone would sell me an adapter to mount a mercedes 616 (4 cyl 2.4l) or 617 (5cyl 3.0l) diesel. A couple guys have done this swap on their own, but there are no plates & flywheels for sale yet. I've sent some inquiries and offered money... I'd love to have one of those guys come through while I work on fixing the brakes & suspension. If I don't hear anything by early November, I'll be going VW for sure

Aren't there several foreign market Toyota diesels that are a direct swap into a 4Runner? I know there's plenty of 4Runner and Toyota truck diesel conversions that have been done, I recall seeing several on Yotatech.

Sure are... many people just get a Hilux Diesel "half cut" and swap over the drivetrain. They run ~3500-4500, and that's more $$ than I want to get into. My second vehicle is cash-only, and has to be pretty much disposable for me to enjoy it. I really do bash these things around mercilessly, and I don't want that to change because I have 5k wrapped up in a diesel swap. Cripes, I drive these things out on the ice!

Plus, I worry about parts for those import swaps. With a Vw, or even an old benz engine, I'd either have stuff on hand or could get anything I need in a couple days.

I just saw a 1990 Geo Tracker today, same year as my old zebra truck. The owner's uncle had it sitting in a garage for the last seven years, no rust either. It still has the bad exhaust, and leaky gas fill spout issue mine once had. I fixed all those things but it still scummed to corrosion of the electrical system.

Sorry about your truck, fun things they are.

You killed another one? If I ever sell my Tristar, you can't have it.
