A Pelican Recommended Good Book!

A Pelican member recommended the following book:

The Art of Racing in the Rain, by Garth Stein. Based on the usually good taste displayed by Pelican Gentleman, I purchased it.

If you love dogs, children, driving fast and believe in unconditional love (or would like to!), then this book is an absolute must read. I have a nearly insatiable reading desire, book after book. I probably read more than 200 books per year not including my text books. Without a doubt, this is the best book I have ever read. You can share this book with anyone, they don't need to be a "car guy" to fall in love with it.

You will laugh, cry, tingle at the fast drive and the ending is so heart warming that you will find yourself cheering as the tears run down your cheeks. Whomever on this site recommended this book, THANK YOU!!!

it was a gift from my wife..
it changed the way I look at them and a few other things

I have since bought a few extra copies and given to friends going thru a rough / sad time with their kids (pet)

I read a review of the book by Peter Egan in R&T. I really like Egan. He said something like, "If you can get past the fact that the book is narrated by a dog it is a great book".

A couple weeks later I was standing in line at Starbucks & they had the book for sale, so I bought it. That was a rather expensive coffee!

Anyway, I could not get past the fact that it was narrated by a dog. I read it, but I thought it was weird & I didn't find it very good at all. Sorry. I just didn't like it. Did I say that it was weird?

I picked this up from the library yesterday based on the recommendations here, and so far so good (about 40 or 50 pages in). I actually like that it's narrated by a dog. I think many of us have been suspicious that our 4-legged-friends think like this I'll post again when I'm finished.

Picked it up last night at the library. Decided to sit down and read a few pages before bed and three hours later I shut it ... finished.

What a great read. I am so thankful that I wasnt on a plane or anywhere else public

I forgot all about this thread! I said I'd repost when I'd read it - it only took me a few days to finish it. I absolutely loved this book! Yes, it's a bit overly sentimental. No, the characters aren't particularly deep or engrossing. No, the writing isn't overly stupendous or anything, but it's a story that draws you in and keeps you there. The scene in Italy at the track is just wonderful. So much ***** happens to poor Denis that by the end when things turn around you just feel so good for him.

This book will never go down in the annals of great literature, but it's absolutely most definitely worth the small amount of time it asks from the reader.

Its a good, but certainly not great book. The bar has been set so low re racing books, that Stein's thoughtful passages on driving stand out as being very good. I enjoyed those portions tremendously, and the dog-as-protaganist approach works better than it sounds.

The (a) niece/legal situation and (b) F1 connection were both, ummm,....implausible at best, however.

I think the niece situation is plausible, the F1 connection was just a fun fantasy element. Plausible would him going to ALMS diving with Mika Salo

Wonderful read, couldn't put it down for anything.

My copy of this book has wandered to it's fourth reader. My only caveat with it is when you are done, pass it on.
