I'm no expert on who is the best guitarist or anything, but I am partial to Mr Angus Young. One of my favorite examples:

Phil Keagy.
Back when he was alive, they asked Hendrix if he was the best guitarist in the world. His reply, "Phil Keagy," a little known Christian artist that can play the snot out of a guitar.

If I had to pick only one, it would be Richard Thompson.
I saw him again few months ago, and he never fails to amaze. Tim |

Like Vai too. Point of note, he studied under Satriani for a while.

Mark Knopfler comes to mind but, I'll have to think about this one a bit.

Man, that's some goood AC/DC. I love Bon-era stuff and Powerage is one of my favorite albums. "Down Payment Blues" is another good song.
The "best" guitarist is such a hard thing to pick. I like Billy Gibbons, Mark Knopfler, Alex Lifeson, Michael Houser of Widespread Panic (oops - you said living)... Anyway, lots of greats.

Mr Young does have a certain School Boy charm about his playing..that of a boys locker room. Thats not to say I don't like his playing becaue I do. Watching that little You Tube Clip I got the feeling that Mr Young has the whole concert playing in his head as well as on stage.
Mr Beck is certainily a survivor...but is slow mentally when compared to Hendrix. Hendrix was able to take abstract thought or emotion and turn it into sound. The others mentioned are merely posers... Well there were a couple mentioned after I read the Thread the first time

Dead heat between Clapton and Knopfler, IMHO.

This is a difficult one to square, there are so many technically brilliant guitarists but few that combine passion with ability.
Personally I rate, Gary Moore, Tony Iommi, Dave Gilmour, Prince, Mark Knopfler and maybe Ritchie Blackmore. |
