"Racing is the best way I know to get away from all the rubbish of Hollywood," he told People magazine in 1979.

He chose to escape the Hollywood BS while all the others flock to it.

Sad that he's passed on, but the sadness is buttressed by the fact of his incredibly well-lived life. He was very fortunate and gave back a lot, had good health and a great marraige for most all his life. He's a good example of how to live, IMO.

There are very few "men of character" in this world, and we just lost one of the best. Hopefully others will step up and fill the void. God speed.

Guys,

Not sure that I am "back" whatever that means...

It means you posted (started a thread) and we noticed, although I don't know if that's your first post since you said adios some time back :)

on my bedroom wall is the movie poster of butch and sundance "guns ablazing" hauling ass across the bolivian courtyard on their way to destiny.

kind of look at it different now, knowing he has passed.

what a great guy. RIP.

livi 09-27-2008 10:13 AM

Great loss. May he keep racing in peace.

RIP Paul
I was fortuante enough to see his Datsun 280's being worked on in the late 70's, early 80's in a body shop in New Haven.
Someone somewhere should name a race in his honor.

I was saddened to hear of his passing. He was one of my favourite actors.

Cool guy, on the positive side he had real impact and at 83 a fairly good innings, he will be missed RIP.

The word "great" gets thrown around a lot these days. From everything I've read Paul Newman lived a great life and tried mightily to be a good man....which is more than most actors do...heck, its more than most of us do.

It seems he succeeded not only in his life but in his philanthropy and in his racing too. I certainly hope his Maker thinks so too. Rest in Peace.

There was a recent article in Autoweek, I think, about PL's last laps at Lime Rock. I can't find it but it was a good read.

imcarthur 09-27-2008 05:36 PM

A Hollywood actor (and a good one too) that you could ACTUALLY look up to & admire. RIP
