Does it bother you that people don't wear ties when on tv anymore?
This is a strange pet peeve of mine. I'm only 37, so I'm no old curmudgeon yet. But it chaps my hide to see people interviewed on news shows when they show up wearing a blazer with no tie, collar opened. Fox even has some weatherman now who wears no jacket at all and rolls his sleeves up. Is it that hot in the studio? I was watching Anderson Cooper tonight, who is always well-dressed (being the son of Gloria Vanderbilt, I expect it of him). And he had on Andy Serwer to talk about Wall St. Andy was not wearing a tie. How is anyone taken seriously when they show up on tv to talk about high finance and are dressed like a boob? Fox's hosts are usually pretty formal during the week and I don't mind that some of their folks are more casual on Saturday shows. Anyway, I have to vent. I can't imagine showing up to be on tv to talk as an authority on something and expect to be taken seriously without looking like I would whe I meet with a client.

+1 for ties.
Ties keep the foreskin from flapping up over their heads.....big help for lawyers and other dickheads.

I've always hated suites, ties, blazers... I can't remember the last time I tucked in my shirt. I understand this is foreign to a lot of people and business environments, but I like a casual atmosphere. I work with mostly crazy genius engineers in r&d and no one questions their credibility if they are wearing stained tee shirts and crusty shorts. I guess it's just a matter of perspective. So I'm in the camp of not caring of people wear ties.....

This will make you laugh:
*** WAYNE DISCLAIMER - While this is a story about the Whitehouse, it has nothing to do with politics or religion. **** http://nbcsports.msnbc.com/id/8628616/ The uniform of serious people is changing. To what, we don't know. Casual wear has turned to everyday wear. If you watch the AMC series Mad Men set in the early 60s, you'll see all of the advertising people in suits. Good luck finding someone in a creative field that even owns a suit today.

Neckties are going the way of bow ties, dress hats, tobacco pipes, etc. In time, the only dudes wearing them will do so as their "trademark" or "hook', kinda like the few dudes who still wear a bow tie or fedora everyday. Doesn't really bother me. It is what it is.

Nope. I think they're utterly useless pieces of clothing. Haven't worn one in years and won't. It's absolutely unnecessary and you can dress very nicely, show respect and professionalism without resorting to such a dull fashion cliche.

Hey, I work in boxer shorts and a t-shirt most days. But if I'm meeting with someone whose business I want or if I were to appear on tv, I'm dressed for success.

The neckwear market is still extremely large, fashion skinny neckwear is a current big hit, but mostly on the coasts. The total market hasn't decreased at all in the last couple of years, as a matter of fact it's stabilized and grown some.
Dress shirt business for the large dept stores is growing vs the last couple of years, and is extremely strong. Brands are stronger than private label, and a lot of it is performance oriented (wrinkle free, and non iron). AUR (average unit retail) has grown as well as the customer appears to be willing ot pay for performance products. Casual wear is increasing, but by and large it's become more refined. Used to be that it was Khakis and a polo shirt....or it was a suit. At least there are more options now. Newest trend in suits is 3 piece..... the vest is coming back! Think Steve McQueen in the Thomas Crown Affair. Still like my ties! I've kept got ever one I've ever had....several hundred by now. E Cog in the wheel at Phillips Van Heusen (we own Calvin Klein...)

I have one (1) congress-set including a tie. I crawl into it only when its mandatory which is during medical congresses abroad. In Sweden most go without. Otherwise I would not dream of strangling myself with such a device.

What I can't stand is wearing a suit w/o a tie. I wore ties for the best part of my life, it never bothered me.

I feel like I'm being punished when I'm wearing a tie.

No, I graduated to big kid ties a couple years ago. The clip-ons started getting too short.

BTW, I wear a tie every work day except Fridays. It's not a big deal.

as someone who must wear a tie everyday, and had to wear one in high school... at 36, i have had my fill of this dreadful and meaningless piece of garbage.
the sooner we do away with the notion that a person cant be taken serisouly unless he is wearing a tie the closer we will be to making this world a better place to live in :-)

Not at all. I hate ties. I think they are the most useless "accessory". I mean seriously, what the hell is the purpose of it??
