Anybody here play with air guns/ potato guns

Several years ago my uncle built an air powered potato gun with a barrel to shoot golfballs and another for large objects. Since he doesnt have the space to store it it has been at my dads place so a friend and i got it out and tested it out a little yesterday.

All of these shots were at about 150 feet. 16oz water bottles

We dinged the sawhorse with one golf ball and it sorta cracked.

Our potato guns in high school were much tamer than that. About three feet long with a screw on cap. Load the potato, spray hair spray or some other aersol fuel into the other end, screw the cap back on and hit the bbq ignitor to send the spark and launch it. Good times

How is that illegal redbeard? the only thing stopping him from building a big gun is lack of funding. We have the tools and equipment to handle materials that big.

Nope, the ones using fuel are not legal, according to the BATFE

So a hairspray potato gun is not legal.

http://www.atf.gov/firearms/faq/faq2.htm#b17

Quote:
Any person desiring a classification of a “potato gun,” “spud gun” or similar device must submit a written request (not e-mail) to the Director and include a complete and accurate description of the device, the name and address of the manufacturer or importer, the purpose for which it is intended, and such photographs, diagrams, or drawings as may be necessary to make a classification. A final determination may require physical examination of the device. Such requests for classification should be submitted to: Bureau of ATF, Firearms Technology Branch.
Not that I agree with this, with my reading of the 2nd amendment.

Compressed air is totally legal! It is not a "fire"-arm.

No fire, no firearm.

Cool so now a trip to the local golf course is in order to pick up a few golfballs. This thing has a tendency to fling them about 1/4 mile away.

quick start or silicone spray is less messy than hairspray, every bit as illegal, though perhaps not in OK

What are you gonna do? A lot of the things I did for fun in high school weren't exactly legal. Actually, I lot of what I do for fun now still isn't legal (at least for 6 more months).

This uses compressed air. See that line running out of the picture and that large tank and blue hose on the cart. My unc is a firefighter and knows how bad the old fashioned ones can go. This thing is much cheaper to shoot to.

I only wish this were true. Our legislatures, city councils, and other governing bodies have been redefining common terms for generations. In my town, anything that propels a projectile is legally considered a "firearm".

I was informed of this redefinition in my then new town (I hadn't moved to this town, it had moved to me - we were rural Snohomish County, then the City of Lynnwood anexed us) by a friendly police officer over a decade ago. I had shot the neighbor's dog with my air rifle to shoo him out of my yard (long story; suffice to say it was a very bad neighbor who was quite well known to the police). The cop told me that my air rifle was a "firearm" under Lynnwood city code. I could no longer target shoot with it in my basement or backyard.

So beware. Check local laws. They neither have to make sense nor use the commonly understood meanings of everyday words.

Nothing says "hold my beer and watch this" like a potato gun. They are such fun.
