Ever get a Warning instead of a Ticket?

I must confess, I got a warning last Sunday (my first).

I've never gotten a warning before, but I have gotten tickets when innocent before (3-times), and guilty (6-times, 4 were on my motorcycle 30 years ago). I've always thought that "a warning" was a myth, or something only large chested women got - really.

I was traveling back home on a curvy and hilly scenic road along the Huron river with the top off. Speed limit is 35 mph, I often vary my speed greatly on this road. Some parts are in terrible shape and yet great stuff to look at so I go 30 mph, other parts have just been paved and are are hard to resist. I know where all the speed traps are and slow down that usual five (cruising at 40) over when approaching these areas.

Many times I piss off other drivers who are cruising 50 in the 35 zone, the big SUV's get right on my tail. I wait for a series of tight turns or hills or better yet a tight turn going up a hill to shake them off with a startling burst of speed from a low gear.

So there I am cruising at 40 in the 35 zone and up ahead is a hill with a sharp left turn and one of those signs warning you of the condition, I drop it to second gear press the gas and fly up the hill (even though no SUV was tailgating me). At the top of the hill I let off the gas and coast in neutral on a slight down hill grade but the car rolls too good and does not slow down at all, I see a cop, hit the brakes quickly down to 37 mph all too obviously.

The cop keeps going and as usual when I'm doing the speed limit a big black SUV comes up from behind and seemingly out of no where and is tailgating me (less than one car length) in less than a minute. I know that I've had time by now to take another route but seriously everyone (but me and old people) runs this road at 50 mph when there are no bicyclist on cooler days.

The cop turned around, and came behind the SUV with the lights flashing, I know the only way that SUV caught up with me is by driving at least 15 MPH over. However, I'm the one that gets pulled over. I coyly ask the office what's the problem. He almost laughs and said I clocked you at 55 as you came over that hill. I admitted that I vary my speed greatly on this road, driving the limit 80% of the time. He said I'm sure this road is hard to resist, does your plate "kach22i" have something to do with the book? I said yes I like the book, and it's also part of my last name plus birth date. He said he like it and he was letting me off with a warning because he liked the plate. He also asked what year the Porsche was, I said 1977. He scanned my license and left.

I cannot believe I got off with a warning. I bet he just wanted a better look at the car.

I purchase two lottery tickets on the way home, it was my lucky day after all.

I've never had a radar detector, maybe it's time.

I've gotten a couple of warnings, but the percentage of warnings to pull overs is pretty slim. Usually if I get pulled over it means that I'm getting a ticket. Actually, I think I got morn warnings in the 911 when I had it than in any other car.

I try to not get pulled over these days.

Had a couple of warnings in the 911 but only for my illegal tint ( tint ?? I thought it was OEM sir"... but I'm still a wanted man in Canada for 140km in a 90 zone ( seems there's no reciprocity with NH in Ontario hehehehe)

yes a couple warnings in blue 911s - but never a ticket

tickets in red 911, red rx7, silver boxster...

be very polite; admit [sorta] and apologize -- i'm really sorry if i was speeding officer officer -- it seemed slow in this car but i guess your radar is more accurate... etc.

after that ask for a warning - could you see you way clear to issue a warning instead of a ticket?

also female or minority officers take extra crap from the bozos out there and appreciate your respect


of course, best way to avoid a measly ticket - "gosh didn't realize i was speeding -- the meth totally f'd up my sense of time"
- they won't waste time on a ticket then

pulled over 3 times...always gotten off with warnings. out here in the midwest, if you pull WAY off the road (so state troopers don't get hit by semi's) and call the guy sir, you'll probably be fine (with 15 mph over the limit).

last christmas eve, i got pulled over for doing 87 in a 55. the cop looked at me, asked why i was going fast (to which i replied: "i'm not going to BS you...i just felt like going faster then the speed limit" to which he laughed). handed me my license back and told me Merry Christmas and to slow down.

Very Rarely, but yes.

Biggest one was when I was driving the 911Cab from Calgary into Revelstoke; down the huge hill into a red light with two semi trucks blocking my path (one in each lane), the light changed to green and I busted out into the left turning lane, accelerated into the intersection and cut in front of the trucks continuing on down the highway. Perfectly orchestrated right in front of a Police Officer waiting at the intersection.

He came after me and I said to him, "that was an idiot move, I'm sorry" He gave me a warning. I think he must've been a Porsche owner at some time in his life? God Bless Him.

Twice when I was much younger, Berkeley PD and an Alameda County Sheriff's Deputy. For the latter, I was somewhat "altered," and actually called him "ociffer", twice, no joke. He sensed that I was apprehensive, and he was surprisingly reassuring. I was very fortunate that evening.

Many times, but most of them thought I was drunk. I have been pulled in my driveway on several occasions, chased down I85 for three miles for a loud exhaust on the vette, and a couple of times for speeding.

I once got a warning ticket in NC for a head light being out, on the INTERSTATE.

Yes, by Cops.

Once by a CHP BUT I had paced him faster than 90 for a while and lets say we had a "discussion" on the side of the road and I won.

I wish that I had a tape recording of it!


Question, who do you have respect for Officers that are cool and give you a warning or ticketing officers?

After I purchased the lottery ticket I decided that if I won that I would donate to some police charity.

The ticket I got a few years ago was with one of the detection guns which defaulted to the largest and fastest moving object. That would of been the red mini van just ahead of me four years ago. I paid the ticket, did not think I could win in court, cop said he did not see a mini van. Little if any respect for him.

I'm told by someone who had to go to traffic ticket class, that the detection equipment can pick the fastest car out of a pack, and now the equipment tells them which one that is, and they don't have to guess, or look for "PORSCHE" on the rear reflector.

When I was 16, my 15 year old girlfriend decided that, with parents out of town, it was was the perfect time for here to take here moms new 928 S4 out for a spin. They lived in Dexter. She came into Ann Arbor to show off, and everything was fine until she decided to take Huron River Drive home.

She turned off Main St., and then accelerated down HRD until she hit that first turn, which if I recall correctly was about a 15mph turn. She was going about 65. She almost made it, but got freaked out by the car oversteering, and wiped the wheel in the opposite direction of the turn. 'OK, whatever you say' said Mr. Porsche, and into the trees she went. The car was leaking oil and coolant everywhere, and the front end was pressed against on of the front time, but she drove it home 15 miles to Dexter.

She called her parents in Florida and told them what happened. He mother asked it she was ok, and she said she was. He mother said, "Well don't do that again. We'll take care of it when we get home", and didn't mention it again. Ummmm....yeah. These folks had a little money.

They just redid that turn, erosion after a hard rain was terrible, debris (tree limbs and shoulder rocks) used to be all over the road.

There is better view distance, so you can see people walking from the first parking area.

I used to like coming up the hill from the other direction (going into town), lamb in lion and out of the turn. It's not as steep now nor as tight, but still a good place to shake the SUV's off your tail.
