Below the Radar... Crazy
I'm pretty sure some of these guys came home with twigs stuck in the control surfaces!

And you are aware that those are French pilots?

Crazy stuff! All it takes is one moment of inattention at those altitudes/speeds and you'd never even know what happened...
I imagine ground effect helps a little with getting TOO low, but still, I think of anything below about 500' as "too low".

More crazy French. 2:08 Pilot has to climb to avoid hitting a truck on the road. Makes me laugh. Last edited by old man neri; 10-06-2008 at 04:50 AM.. |

Actually a few have survived ground strikes but they are rare. I also know of a few barb wire strikes (Hornet barb wire across the starboard intake and a Herk scraped off a piss tube in back.). One of the problems with being low enough to have ground effect help push you up is that you are low enough to drag a wing in a turn on level ground, thus requiring a climb to turn. Try those altitudes at night on goggles, stuff flying about. That is a bit sportier. S/F, FOG |
