Crazy stuff! All it takes is one moment of inattention at those altitudes/speeds and you'd never even know what happened...

I imagine ground effect helps a little with getting TOO low, but still, I think of anything below about 500' as "too low".

Actually a few have survived ground strikes but they are rare. I also know of a few barb wire strikes (Hornet barb wire across the starboard intake and a Herk scraped off a piss tube in back.).

One of the problems with being low enough to have ground effect help push you up is that you are low enough to drag a wing in a turn on level ground, thus requiring a climb to turn.

Try those altitudes at night on goggles, stuff flying about. That is a bit sportier.
