Wilmington North Carolina-What do you know?

Considering a move within the next two years. One of the places that we are interested in is Wilmington, NC. What do you know about the cost of living, quality of life, school system, business climate, etc.?

Thanks,
Ben

Ben, I haven't been to Wilmington in years and can't comment on your specific questions, but in general, I've only heard positive things (well, except for the "out of control" SWAT team incident a few years ago). In general, NC offers a great combination of everything you mention, but I wouldn't "generalize" about any specific public school system. A LOT of folks find the area desirable and I would think it's definitely worth checking out.

My wife and I stayed in Wilmington for a couple of days before heading to the outer banks. We got to see a good deal of the city and we both agreed that we could enjoy living there. I can't comment on anything other than the perception we got as visitors.

my wife and i love wilmington and considered moving there at one point - jobs where soft unless you where looking for military (security clearance required) or service based work and the schools where not the best.

prices for homes have really climbed there in the recent past though not sure what they are doing now with all the mess that is going on.

in general it is (was) an area that is improving

We don't get out there very often but it is a great place. Lots to see and do. Folks are friendly and the food is great. Check out realtor.com for housing ideas. See you at the beach.

We travel there several times a month on business and considered moving there a couple of years ago. In general it is a great place. But it has a high growth rate and with it the expected congestion. Also cost of living calculators we found show that it was more expensive than Charlotte and the home prices we saw pretty much confirmed it.

But all in all, we would move there if things were to work out.
