I can't see any 914 breaking $150K, especially one with no race history, except for the few 8's that were made.

I don't know the cars value, but at least it actually represents a part of Porsche history.

Might be a bit optimistic for that particular car, but at least 2 of the remaining factory GT's have sold for over $300k within the last two years.

For that kind of asking price, you'd think he'd invest in a better camera and some proper web hosting.

I know that car, as it spent most of its life in Tulsa, owned by a friend of mine. What is unique about it is this: it is original, with no damage history and low miles. If you wanted to know what a new GT was like back in the day, this is the closest you'd ever get. All of the other GT's have been raced hard and put away wet. Many have been restored to quite high standards but an original car is always more interesting to most collectors. This one was for the most part unkown to most people in the Porsche world until Howard decided to sell it. It was driven sparingly, for fun, and kept in a nice climate-controlled storage. Until Bill Noon bought it, I doubt it had ever been driven in the rain.
The stock market may be down but there are still a bunch of wealthy people in the world. This car might end up going to Europe, given that cars bought here are still a bit of a bargain to those guys. For those of you nit-picking the presentation, there are quite a few pictures of the car out there on the net, if you know where to look. I'd wager that the pool of serious buyers for the car know quite a bit about it now. When it surfaced in the Porsche world, there was a fair amount of talk about it, as it was almost like a barn find. Here's a good place to start: http://www.pbase.com/9146gt/factory_9146gt_race_cars_sn9140431571_buzzani_pa_d ehaven Did I mention it is stinkin' fast? I visited 3 web pages dedicated to that car and not one single picture of the engine or even a semblance of a description of the engfine. No displacement, no details, nothing.
It does have an engine, doesn't it? |

![]() Actually, the engine is a very close cousin to a 906 engine. It's a 2 litre, with high compression, big valves and fairly radical cam timing, twin plugs and 46mm Weber carbs. The exhaust is a pair of megaphones, although a rally muffler was available. It will make in the neighborhood of 200-210 hp and revs to around 8k, or so. There are lots of special parts in it, as it is more of a race motor than a street motor. It will give a 930 all it wants, in a straight line. A great deal of parts on a factory GT are different from a normal 914-6. The fuel system, oil system, suspension, brakes, interior, bodywork, yada, yada, yada, are all different. As an example, what look like S calipers on the front were often 908 calipers, which were wider to accomodate thicker pads and had quick release pad change hardware. Not something the average guy would notice just walking around the car. Here's a page with photos of the engine, taken from the link I posted. It shows the car when Howard owned it: http://www.pbase.com/9146gt/factory_9146gt_race_cars_sn9140431571_buzzani_deha ven_original&page=all JR |

I have no idea what gearing is in it but I'd bet it's a fair bit shorter than that. I don't think it would pull that kind of speed, even with gearing that would be that tall. My guess is that it's good for between 150 and 160.

In defense of colletors everywhere, what seems reasonable depends entirely on your bank balance. If you want a particular car and there aren't many of them, supply and demand set the price. You pay what you have to, to buy it, or you live without it. Simple.
I know these prices seem high but Porsche prices have historically been dirt cheap, compared to many other marques. Look at the Ferrari world for a minute. Cars from the '60's that were considered bottom feeders (cars that were worth $20,000 to $25,000 and ugly enough that nobody wanted them for a collection) are now $100,000 and up. The street Dino 246 (a direct competitor to the 911 when new) can easily sell north of $150,000. I'm not saying any car is worth over $100,000 (I haven't kept any that crossed that mark) but there are enough rich people in the world that those prices are a reality. The guys that can afford them are, for the most part, not fools. They were smart enough to make a pile of money.... JR |

My only problem with the car is that a couple of months ago Frank was asking $325,000 for it and now wants $50K more. The economy is going the other way and a serious buyer would know about his price increase.
It is extremely low mileage. And I don't believe it will hit 150. 914-6 start to lift in the rear at about 125. Here is my favorite shot of this car @ LeMans T.C. ![]() |
