Thanks for the advice. I bought my first gun

I bought my first gun 10 days ago and picked it up today. Went straight to the the range and shot off 100 rounds.
Got it just in time for the election and all the fun that might happen here in LA after.

I bought a Beretta 9mm 92SF

I will post a picture of the gun and my first target once I find where my wife put the camera. It was fun to shoot after I got over the nerves.

Thanks for all of your advice and opinions. Now I just hope I never have to use it in anger.

Steve

Congrats Steve! I'd be curious to know how much gun sales have spiked in this last week or so.

92FS?

good choice. look at the clip. the california 10 round is crap. and best thrown away. but the 15s can be found easily enough.

The gun store was packed both times I was there. The day I bought it was the last day that you could clear the background check in time to pick it up before the election. The store was so busy you had to wait in line to take the tests, fill out the forms and buy a gun. They where sold out of some Spring Field lower end guns.
The guy who helped me today said on the weekend people had to wait outside it was so full

i think/hope i'm safely grandfathered in. my main complaint with the 10 is that it never fed properly. and would jam. hated the thing.

maybe they've fixed the problem.

ask at www.calguns.net but, as a former CA resident, I think you are correct. Don't know if it is a felony (versus a misdmeanor) but anyway I think it is illegal.

I had (have) hi-cap magazines for my Glock but it was okay as I'd owned them since the 1980s.

Realistically, if you buy older hi-cap magazines (say, on an out-of-state trip), I'm not sure how you'd ever get found out.

Gents,

The jamming problem might be from a spring that may have become weakend from keeping the clip loaded over a period of time. Replace the spring once a year at least if you leave it loaded for home defense measures. I had this issue with my Taurus PT 99, basically same exact pistol as the Beretta 99f. If you have thouroughly cleaned the weapon and still not feeding or jamming, pull the spring out and stretch it slightly, it should work better.

Always liked Berettas. The 92F is too big for my hand, but the .45 Cougar is perfect. And that thing is more accurate than the several other automatics I have (not that they're anything special). I have the little .32 Tomcat and their 12 ga automatic Silver Mallard as well.

I just brought this home a few hours ago after the 10 day pawn hold expired. I stole it for about $200 below normal.

I don't know much about guns, but I was shocked at how well I shot it right out of the box. The first two mags I put in the center of the target at 30 feet.
I kept the first target and will post a picture so you guys can mock my first time skills.
I tried shooting at 30', 15', 55' 25' and 20'
I also bought a good set of ear protection, glasses and a gun cleaning kit.
How often should I clean and oil it? If someone could recommend the best way to clean it I would appreciate it.
I loaded 3 mags with hollow points and locked it in the safe.
will hollow points go through hollow core doors?

I can now see how you could spend a lot of money on guns

Usually 18 for long guns and 21 for handguns. I think it's state specific though. There's a thread on AZshooting where a guy with a CA drivers license and who's under 21 posted a WTB ad for a handgun and folks suspect it's a BATF sting. Thread got locked and poster got banned.

Oh no! Not the "spring set" myth again!

Seriously, for quality firearms, with quality springs in their magazines, springs becoming "weakened" because the magazine has been loaded for an extended period of time, simply does not happen.

Magazines (usually poor quality aftermarket ones) are one of the leading causes of jamming in automatic firearms, and a weak magazine spring can certainly cause problems, but quality springs simply do not "become weak" because they are compressed for an extended period of time.
