Not a good way to start one's day...
So I'm driving into work, and hear the high-pitch wail of a siren. I slow, and a police car passes me as it heads toward the busy intersection in front of me. With lights flashing and the siren continuing to wail, the police car also slows at the intersection. Then, once it seems all is clear, the police car slowly begins to creep across, until wham, a woman in a Mazda 3 hatchback t-bones the police car on the passenger's side. The drivers seemed okay. The police car will need a new front passenger's door, and I didn't see damage to the Mazda, though I'm certain there is some.
I did see, however, the damage to the woman's ego. Her hand-over-face humiliation was evident, and the police officer, also a woman, was not in the least bit amused as she stepped out of her cruiser. I hope the Mazda 3 driver has adequate insurance and up-to-date registration. Not a good morning, obviously.

You would think that the police or ambulance services could change the signal rather than creep through an intersection endangering themselves and the public. I saw the same thing this morning- but it was only a close call. A Camaro and a Mercedes doing fifty nearly creamed a cop- but he would have been hard to see as he was blocked by trucks.
This particular intersection was covered in traffic cameras that can photograph your car after the light turns red and you enter the intersection, tell it's speed, note the time and save the data in a file that can be automatically linked to driver's license numbers that can mail you a ticket. But a cop or an ambulance can't change the signal- there isn't any money in that sort of technology. In the People's Republic of Montgomery County, Maryland "safety" is spelled "r e v e n u e". |
