Why yoown (or don't own) an assault rifle style of weapon
Just curious...many of you own AK47 or Ar15 type weapons, Some of you think they're ridiculous. Why do you own them/not own them. Collectors? Home defense? Target shooting? Fear of an uprising?
I'll start. Back before the Brady ban was enacted a buddy bought ten chinese made AK47 clones complete with tripods and bayonets still packed in grease for $60 or so apiece. I took one off his hands because they were so cheap and I thoiught it would be a fun piece of weaponry history. I've shot maybe 50 rounds through it. Its tucked away in a closet at the house not being used. You? DISCLAIMER: The use of the term "assault...weapon" in the title was not intended to be a political statement or value judgment. ![]() Last edited by Dueller; 11-11-2008 at 03:22 PM.. |

-.223 is good caliber for hitting woodchucks and other varmints at fairly long distances. -bleeding heart anti-gun liberals want them banned

$60 would have been a screaming deal for AK variants around the time of Brady! As for why I own what I own: I own it primarily because people like Obama want me disarmed. Look at pictures and video from WWII of people loaded into boxcars being transported to concentration camps. Would those people be in that position if they all had "assault" weapons? NEVER AGAIN! |

Don't get me wrong...I own several guns. Some have sentimental value; others are plinking toys; others I use for the occasional hunting trip. I own a few pistols and will occasionally carry one in tyhe car when I'm going into a potentially dangerous area.
But for the most part I feel little need for a weapon for personal protection. Nor does my brother, who probably has a collection in excess of 700-800 guns. |

If for no other reason, the fact that the government even thinks of banning something would make me buy it. I have an M4 and it's a super rifle, a lot of gun for the money, reliable, easy to break down and clean, parts grow on trees, nothing bad to say about it. If the SHTF, it'll be worth its weight in gold. But until then, it's just a good shooter. I have a lot of handguns and am rarely more than arm's length from one. Cops ain't gonna protect you even in good times. They take the report and clean up the mess. In bad times, you're really on your own.

Yep. I don't need an assault weapon but when someone tells me I can't have one they suddenly look very appealing.

Fun to shoot, fun to clean, fun to own pieces of history, fun to collect.
And if the S.H.T.F. the people with the guns are going to be in a much, much, much better position than those without. Besides, it's Veteran's Day and a great day to remember that there are those throughout our history that fought and spilled their guts on the ground and died so the rest of us could have the rights we have today - including the right to keep and bear arms. That alone is good enough a reason for me. To not avail myself of the rights they fought and died for seems somehow disrespectful of their sacrifice. They obviously thought it was important enough. I guess I should too to some extent...

I have a Bushmaster Varminter with a very nice scope to reach and touch the many groundhogs that like to stage periodic rebellions on my farm.
We have had much success. This year there are no warren entrances in any of my fields or, more importantly, horse pastures. Varmint Cong. ![]()

I like machines.
Cars and guns. The semi-automatic rifle is the pinnacle of that branch of engineering. It is usable art. It is a tool. Much like the air-cooled Porsche is the apogee of automotive expression. The enemies of our country have never been dissuaded by a tennis racket, a football or a golf club, it has been an American with a rifle that has kept us free. Pick up a rifle and you change instantly from a subject to a citizen. - Jeff Cooper

I'd like a FN-FAL variant, or a AR-15.
But I have no genuine use for one, and the cost of ammunition and the need to join an outdoor range would mean that I'd use it maybe 2X year. So this sort of rifle is not real high on my gun purchase wish list. First, I'd buy my uber-target-gun .22, then another CCW gun (or get my Detonics CombatMaster worked on), then a full-size 1911 variant. Then I'd think about a black rifle. And, considering how the economy is, none of those are getting bought this year.

My rifles are all sporting arms, bolt action in various calibers....possible exception a stainless mini-14...it has a more friendly appearance than an AR-15, but functions roughly the same in semi-auto...
My M-1 Garand not considered an "assault rifle" these days. Go figure. If I weren't worried about today's record keeping I'd go for a Steyer scout rifle...just like the concept.
