Cut the cord today - no more TV in my house

Yep. I cancelled my Direct TV service today once and for all. Done with the idiot box. I'll still keep a television around for watching DVDs or whatever occasionally, but it feels good to be rid of the monthly rip-off.

Anyone want to buy a Direct TV receiver with dish & DVR real cheap?

I'll probably just throw it on ebay or craigslist.

We did this last year. Didn't know it would be so liberating.

Best part; our family grew closer together. What a major bonus!

If it weren't for ESPN, I'd be really tempted.

I watch far less TV since our son was born in March.
I watch a bit of hockey on TV and occasionally some mind numbing junk. It is amazing how the idiot box grabs the little guys attention if he comes into the room while the box is on. It is a little spooky. He is going to be a limited TV kid....
Congrats on cutting the cord!!!

That's what sports bars are for - and I've got three within stumbling distance.

Except for sports, Discovery, History, Speed (once and a while), and HGTV, everything is really just mind-numbingly stupid. I absolutely cannot stand reality TV, and it seems to be 98% of the programming.

Got rid of my Dish as well. Just use an antenna now. I have been paying $70/month for years now and never watched it.

we've been without for almost ten years now.

When we moved to our current house, getting the cable installed was never a priority. After several weeks went by, my wife suggested we try to go six months without TV. After six months, there is no desire to fill my head with such drivel.

We have a DVD player, and watch movies (occasionally) commercial-free. Makes normal TV seem pretty stupid. No regrets.

Can't live without news shows. I used to think I'd not survive with only one CSPAN channel.

What do you consider "News Shows"? Seriously. I don't think there are any on TV. Its all infotainment.

After ten years, I still only know about 4-5 chords on my guitar. Slow learner, I guess....

There is still the 5 o'clock news, every day, or at least three free stations...then there's the world news reports on at least 2 stations, everyday...for free.

Also, every morning while getting ready for work, there's the morning news shows (on at least FOUR free stations), which always have a liberal helping of weather and traffic, two things that I find very interesting when getting ready to leave for work.

I usually have Fox on in the background when I'm working and at night I usually have CNN on. I just like to have news on all the time. In my old office we had the audio feed from CNN running through our speaker phones.

so if you cut the cord with your tv, do you now spend twice as much time on your computer?

This might sound insane coming from a guy with my post count and who's such a regular here, but I'm seriously considering dumping my Internet connection also. I waste too much time on the computer at home. I could always go to the office or to a local coffee shop with my laptop if I needed to. I think it'd make me value the time online more and use it more judiciously than simply frittering it away like I do now.

(yes, that's an addict admitting he has a problem.)

Or it might just piss the people at the coffee shop off that you are always there. C'mon give yourself a little bit of indulgence.
