				Buying a Gun On-Line

All the threads about hand guns regenerated my interest. When we lived in Texas many years ago a buddy and I would go to the range a couple of times per month. Great fun. So last weekend my son, who has become a gun fan, and I went to the range. I rented a bunch of guns to see what I might now like. Surprisingly I liked my old S&W 357mag the least. As a quick aside, I shot a Kimber Ultra Carry II, Sig P226, and a modern S&W 9mm. The S&W was for me the easiest to shoot, and I found myself surprisingly accurate with the shorter barrel Kimber. So I am thinking about a 9mm Kimber. Anyway I haven’t bought a hand gun since 1983. There are a lot of new laws on the paperwork. For example I know a “background check” has to be done. My question is more with the on-line dealers. How does one complete a transaction with these folks? Seems they are required to ship the gun to a local dealer who does the paperwork for a fee. Is that right? Do dealers care if you are buying from them or some other dealer? Are there folks that simply specialize in these type transactions? Thoughts, suggestion, comments welcome.

Most will require shipping only to an FFL local to you, so a good first step is to find a local FFL and ask them how much they charge to do transfers. Once you have that, it's pretty easy. Best of luck.

Our local range/gun shop does FFL transfers and it's not as difficult as it appears to be.

I've found some great guns and deals on gunbroker.com and have bought some really nice pieces with no problem at all.

IIRC, a local gun shop charged a friend $40 for the transfer...he was military, based/living in Nevada, but still had Oregon as a home address...thus the need for the transfer, since he bought the gun in Nevada. I think the local shop may have given him a price break on the transfer because he was military? I'm not sure what "usual" is in this case. Oh, I got involved by being asked to talk to ther local Gun Shop. My friend picked up the gun when he came to town to visit...

I pay $35 for a no hassel place. I still fill out the form, but no NICs check with my CHL.

A lot of online gun dealers have thousands of FFL's on file already and will ship to whichever one is closest to you. If you don't know one, most of the online dealers can point you in the right direction, you tell the FFL a package is coming and he calls you when it's there.

Jim, are you exercising your 2nd amendment rights yet? Or is the man still keeping you down?

For a first time buyer for an internet sale it goes like this: You make your arrangement for sale with the seller You contact a local FFL willing to do the transferand get a signed copy of their license. This can be mailed, faxed or scanned and e-mailed to the seller. The seller ships the firearm to the transfer FFL You go to the FFL, and fill out the regular forms. The FFL runs a NICS check on you. If all is good, you pay them the transfer fee and walk away with the goods.

LOL! We're actually in discussions to pick up a second gun, so, we'll see how it goes. We're getting pretty regular at going to the range, and it might not be too hard to get her to OK another purchase. But, between the local FFL and DC Metro Police, we get stuck with $185 in fees above and beyond what the gun's price, shipping, and seller FFL fee hits us up for.

Unfortunately, that is what I believe what the rest of the country will be in for soon. All of the "fees" will be raised as a minimum and it will drive the small fry out of business.

Remember these words: "It's easier to beg forgiveness than ask permission". Repeat them. Commit them to memory. Tattoo them on your forearm if necessary. Now go put them into practice.
